“Because I was worried about her, psycho. And my hormones are all over the place still!”

“I’m sorry, butterfly. I know this is emotional. She’s safe, she’s home with us now.”

I take a seat by myself while everyone else sits with their partners. Reid stays silently stoic, sitting relaxed in one of the leather chairs. His legs are spread, his body hunched forward with his forearms resting on his knees.

“What do Mom and Dad know?” I finally ask.

“That you went with Reid to visit an old friend from college and you lost your phone,” Liam says.

“Okay, so not too bad. Good job,” I praise.

“How are you really?” Dallas asks, concern etched deeply into his features. My heart aches looking at him. His typical lighthearted persona is missing and replaced with a man who has seen true evil this year and now had to face this stuff with me.

“I promise, I’m okay. Everything is very diluted at this point, like waking up from a nightmare and trying to remember the details. It’s fuzzy at best. I’m okay. Ready to start living again and moving forward. It’s good to be home,” I offer.

Dallas’ face relaxes, and Blaire rubs her hand over his forearm in comfort. “Believe her when she speaks, she’s a big girl and isn’t going to lie to save your feelings,” she tells him.

“I know, baby girl. Just want to make sure.”

“Fuck, we missed you, sis,” Carter says after a beat of silence.

“I missed you all, too.” And I mean it. There was once a time I thought I loved my siblings more than anything in the world, until I fell in love with Reid Knight and realized that was no longer true. I will walk away from all of them if they can’t get on board with Reid and me being together, but it doesn’t mean it won’t kill me to do it.

CHAPTER 24

WatchingKinsey reunite with her family is emotional. The five Hayes siblings are beyond close, and while I feel so much gratitude that my woman is surrounded by siblings who love her fiercely, it makes me miss my sister that much more.

After things settled down, Sawyer nods at me, signaling that he wants to talk privately. I stand and wait for him as he whispers something to Ivy and walks in my direction. Together we step into one of the smaller offices on the main floor, not far from where everyone is sitting, but far enough away that we can talk privately.

“She seems good.”

“She is.”

“A little surprising though, considering what she’s been through,” he says warily, like he’s speculating and isn’t quite ready to call me out on it yet. Too bad I’m about to beat him to the punch on this one.

“She’s strong.”

“It’s more than that, brother. She’s differentsomehow. Lighter, happier. Like she found a piece of herself that was missing.”

“She did.”

Sawyer looks at me, arching one of his brows and running his hand across his beard, waiting for me to elaborate.

“Me.”

I brace for his reaction to cut me deep when his head bounces back like I sucker punched him.

“You’re gonna need to repeat that,” he says, his voice ruthlessly calm, his eyes darkening.

“I’m in love with Kinsey. She’s mine, and I have no plans of that changing.”

Sawyer is a straight shooter and it’s better to get it all out in the open, point blank, rather than pussy footing around the truth of the matter.

“You’re telling me you’re in love with my little sister?” Sawyer balks at me, and I brace myself for whatever physical attack is coming.

“Are you fucking with me?”
