Yes, we should.

I waited for a response, and waited. Finally, another little paper slipped through the door.

Will you come over?

I rolled my eyes and scribbled on the back of this new paper.

Why now?

Before I went over and risked making a fool of myself, I needed to know why. I didn’t have to wait long for this reply.

Because I’m ready to talk.

I scribbled quickly back.

But why now?

I could see the shadow of his hand as he slipped a new paper back again.

Because I know how I feel now. I found words for how I feel.

I couldn’t fault him for that. Often, I needed the same thing. With a deep breath, I raised my hand to the door and knocked.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

The door opened quickly. My locks were already unlocked.

“Kenna.”

JUDE

“You wanted to talk?” Her voice shook me back to reality. She looked amazing.

“I did,” I managed to mumble out, moving out of the way to let her pass. She hesitated only a moment before coming inside. She plopped down at my table with a bit of a sigh.

“So, let’s talk,” she began, her arms crossed ahead of her. She was defensive. I couldn’t blame her.

“I know I should have called,” I began.

“You can do what you want, Jude,” she sassed.

“I just needed some time to think,” I explained. I didn’t know how to explain this whole situation.

“Time to think about what, exactly?” She was looking down at her fingernails, avoiding me.

“Can you look at me, please?” I asked, needing to see her eyes.

“Why?”

“Because I don’t like it when you avoid looking at me.” I tried to explain.

“Well, I don’t like the fact that you avoided me for weeks on end!” she exclaimed, standing from her chair, and smacking her hands on the table.

“I didn’t do it to hurt you, Kenna,” I tried again.

“Then why did you do it!?” she yelled back.

“Because I needed to deal with my guilt, dammit!” I yelled right back.
