“Now, that’s a way to end a scene. Though—” she began before lowering her voice to a badly executed stage whisper, “I think you’re supposed to call red.”
I rolled my eyes at her, feeling the muscle finally start to give.
“You little smart ass,” I chastised.
“Well,” she shrugged, “I’d rather be a smart ass than a dumb ass.”
“Fucking hell, you’ve been around Gideon too much. That’s it. I’m forbidding the two of you from spending time together,” I playfully forbade her. “The two of you are far too conniving to be trusted.”
“Try all you want, Daddy, but I did not consent to you controlling who I spend time with,” she teased, sticking her tongue out at me.
“Stick that tongue out again and I’ll put it to good use there, my pretty little slut,” I drawled. Her eyes went wide, her cheeks flushing. “Never lose that blush, darling. Never ever.”
“Are you okay now?” she asked, helping me to my feet.
“I am. Now let’s get cleaned up and in bed. I plan on waking you first thing in the morning with my head between your thighs.”
“Promises, promises,” she sighed happily.
After a long shower full of gentle touches and kisses, we finally made our way to bed. I pulled her into my arms, her soft curves fitting perfectly around my body and giving me that peace I craved so much from her.
“I’m worried, Ollie,” she whispered into the darkness of the room. “Every time you go to work at the church, I worry they will see right through us, and this entire plan will fall apart around us.” I thought over her words, feeling a similar fear within myself.
“I worry about that too, love,” I admitted softly. “I honestly think we all do. But we have something worth fighting for. And I’m willing to put in all the hard work, willing to overcome any and every obstacle, no matter how insurmountable it may seem. Because this — what we have right here — is worth it. God, I can’t wait for our future outside of this place, Delilah.” Her arms tightened around me, her nose nuzzling into my chest.
“I can’t either.” I almost felt her words more than heard them.
“I love you, Delilah. And I couldn’t be happier. My love, my little firefly, who lights up the night’s sky and guides my way out of the darkness.”
I smiled as her breathing slowed, feeling her falling asleep against my chest. I was happier than I had ever been and found myself looking forward to the future with more hope than I’d ever known existed.
