Carlita eyed the existing cameras, recognizing them as the brand Elvira sold. “Those are permanently mounted.”
“Unfortunately. Like I said, these are quality cameras. I have temporary mounts for them.”
“Meaning we can place them wherever we want?”
“Correct.”
Carlita crossed the open deck and stood in front of the cannons, the ones the crew fired off during the show’s staged mutinies, the highlight of the pirate ship’s show.
She grabbed hold of the railing and peered into the barrel. “I think I've found the perfect place for the cameras. Now all we need to do is convince Pete to let us hide them inside.”
Chapter 17
“You tested the cameras to make sure they’re recording?” Carlita asked.
“Yes, ma’am. Completely unobstructed and dialed in.”
“You warned the evening staff not to fire the cannons?”
“We’re not allowed to fire them after dark, so we’re safe,” Brad explained. “I’ll be working the day shift tomorrow and will take them out as soon as I get here in the morning.”
Carlita glanced at her watch. “What time do you start work?”
“At nine.”
“I hope we get something.”
“Me too.” Brad placed his tools back inside the box. “Pete didn’t seem at all surprised when I told him you were here and wanted to install cameras inside the cannons.”
“He knows me too well.” Carlita grinned. “I’m sure he’ll have a few questions when I get home.”
Brad followed Carlita and Rambo off the ship and to the end of the dock. Turning back, he looked up toward the open deck. “We found the perfect hiding spot. No one will ever know they’re there.”
“If this works as well as I hope it does, we could be a step closer to nailing the San Maris Gang.”
“The city owes you a reward if you do,” he joked.
“Thanks again for your help.” Carlita promised she and Pete would swing by first thing the following morning and took off.
Back home, she tracked her husband down and found him in the restaurant’s kitchen, clad from head to toe in his pirate costume and in the middle of a staff meeting.
She waited off to the side until he finished. “Having a busy day?”
“Not as busy as you.” Pete sneaked in a kiss. “Are your surveillance cameras installed and ready to go?”
“Yes. I hope we didn’t just waste our time.” Carlita shared her thoughts about how the gang appeared to be focusing most of their criminal activity near the Savannah River. “Dernice is the one who figured it out.”
“And you ran with it.”
“With a lot of help from Brad.” Carlita reminded him they would need to head over there in the morning to check the camera recordings before the ship set sail. “With any luck, we’ll see something.”
The hostess on duty appeared. “I’m sorry to interrupt, but your tour group is here.”
“Arr.” He playfully brandished his “sword.” “Time for me to pillage ‘n plunder, matey.”
“I guess this means Rambo and I are on our own for dinner tonight. Dernice will be by at seven to pick me up. She wants to check out some of the places the gang hit.”
Pete started to say something, and Carlita cut him off. “If we happen to see them, we’ll stay on the down low. We won’t draw attention to ourselves.”
