“What about Luigi?” Pete asked.

“Having the San Maris Gang set up camp in Savannah has been good for business,” Elvira said. “I’m adding another security team and have been thinking about promoting Luigi to manage it.”

“He seems like the perfect guy for the job.”

“As soon as I get back to the office, I’m going to track him down and offer him the position.”

Carlita gave her a thumbs up. “You won’t regret it. He’s solid.”

“You gave him a glowing recommendation. Not to mention he’s never caused me any issues. Honestly, it was a no-brainer.”

The group reached the main tunnel. Pete locked the door behind them and double-checked to make sure it was secure. “I’m sorry it didn’t turn out as you had hoped, Elvira.”

“I guess it was too good to be true.”

Carlita stood by Pete’s side, watching as the sisters trekked back toward Elvira’s tunnel. “Do you think she’s going to give up on her quest for treasure?”

“No.” Pete heaved a heavy sigh. “Unfortunately, I don’t envision her throwing in the towel this easily. She’s regrouping and strategizing her next step as we speak. I would bet the treasure we didn’t find on it.”

Chapter 3

Carlita parted ways with her husband not long after leaving the tunnel, having received a text message from Tony, her middle son, who managed the family’s pawn shop, asking her to stop by.

She arrived to find her daughter-in-law Shelby and granddaughters Violet and Melody were visiting.

“There are my girls.” Carlita knelt next to Violet and gave her a gentle hug. “I was thinking the other day it was time for you and little sissy to come spend the night.”

The young girl’s eyes lit. “Mom and Dad bought me a new canvas and paint kit.”

“Violet has been practicing her painting every day.” Shelby affectionately ruffled her daughter’s hair. “We have the next DaVinci on our hands.”

“Maybe you can paint something for Nana to hang on her wall.” Carlita took the baby from Shelby and snuggled her close. “And how’s this little lady been?”

Shelby briefly closed her eyes. “I’ve been trying new tricks to get her to sleep all the way through the night, but so far nothing has worked.”

“In other words, we’ll have some extra playtime when the girls come over,” Carlita joked.

“Without a doubt.”

She and Shelby discussed an impromptu sleepover, agreeing on the following night.

Tony sauntered over and gave his mother a peck on the cheek. “Thanks for getting here so fast.”

“You’re welcome.”

“Your Ma has offered to take the girls for the night,” Shelby said.

“Nice.” Tony playfully nudged his wife. “Full night’s sleep…here we come.”

“We should get going.” Shelby told them she and the girls were on their way to the grocery store.

Tony walked them to the door and returned to where his mother stood waiting. “Luigi is on his way here. He said he wanted to chat about security.”

Carlita immediately thought about the San Maris Gang. “Does it have anything to do with the gang?”

“To be honest, I’m not sure.” Tony looked over her shoulder. “There he is now.”

Luigi slipped inside and made a beeline down the center aisle. “Hey, Mrs. T. Thanks for the rec.”
