“Song.”Logan’s voice was rough with sleep or suspicion, probably both.
“It’s Roberts.I need backup.”No pleasantries, no explanations.
A pause.“Must be desperate if you’re calling me.”
“Victoria’s making her move.Now.”
His tone changed instantly.“Where?”
“The mine.North entrance. She’s got people inside.”
“I’ll be there in an hour with a team.”No hesitation now.Victoria had him, too.“Don’t start the party without me.”
“You’re up early.”
I turned to find Felicity in the doorway, already dressed in dark tactical pants and a fitted jacket. She’d pulled her honey-blonde hair into a tight ponytail, practical and determined.
“Absolutely not.”The words came out as a growl.
She crossed to the massive oak desk where our plans from last night were spread across the surface.Red marks highlighted Victoria’s suspected operatives within the mine, and blue circles indicated security vulnerabilities.“I’m coming with you.”
I let out a snarl.“Too dangerous.”
Now she did look up, her eyes flashing with the same determination I’d seen in the cave.“I’m not just your mate, Tanner.I’m your partner.I’ve earned my place in this fight.”
My wolf rumbled with conflicting instincts.Protect her, keep her safe, but also respect her strength. The tug-of-war must have shown on my face because her expression softened.
“I’ll stay back if the fighting gets physical,” she conceded.“But you need me for coordination and strategy. You know I’m right.”
I did know.And I hated it.“First sign of danger, you retreat.That’s non-negotiable.”
The SUV’s tires crunched over the gravel road as we approached the mine.Morning mist still clung to the valley below, but up here, the sun illuminated the scarred face of the mountain where generations of Roberts men had extracted wealth at any cost.
“There’s Sheriff Reyes.”I pulled in beside him, noting the tactical gear visible beneath his uniform jacket.Reyes was no ordinary small-town lawman. He’d come to Angel Spring after fifteen years with Denver SWAT.
“Morning, Roberts.”He nodded to me, then to Felicity.“Ma’am.”
“What have you got?”I asked without preamble.
He pulled out his phone, showing us night-vision images.“My deputies caught these around 3 AM.At least six individuals, moving equipment into the north entrance.”
I studied the grainy images, recognizing shapes of industrial containers.“Those look like chemical tanks.”
“Bigger problem,” Reyes swiped to another image.“We identified two of them.Former employees of Alpha Fang’s chemical division.”
Felicity leaned closer.“Victoria’s specialists.”
“And they’re carrying more than just chemicals,” I muttered. The images clearly showed assault rifles slung across their backs. My jaw tightened. This wasn’t just industrial sabotage.Victoria was prepared for war.
A black SUV rolled up behind us, dust billowing around its tires as it came to a stop.Logan emerged, his tall frame unfolding from the driver’s seat. Two men in bulletproof vests flanked him.
“Roberts.”Logan nodded tersely as he assessed the situation.“Looks like my psychotic aunt is making her grand finale.”
“She’s planning something big,” I said, showing him the images.“These chemicals could contaminate the entire watershed.”
Logan’s expression darkened.“Victoria was always cunning, but she’s desperate now.Her banishment from the pack made her unstable.”
His security specialists unloaded equipment from their vehicle.I spotted thermal imaging devices, communications gear, and weapons that definitely weren’t available to civilians.
