He spoke slowly. “By getting back together.”
“Ah.” It made sense. She always was more invested. “I see.”
“I should have ended it from the beginning. I just thought if we took a break, she’d see we weren’t meant to be. And that house I can’t seem to sell?”
“Yeah?”
“I bought it.”
My eyes grew wide. I swatted his arm. “You bought it?” I said incredulously.
He tentatively smiled. “Yep. Are you going to bring me a welcome to the neighborhood basket?”
“Really?” I asked, adrenaline pumping through me. Forget the caffeine I desperately needed to get through today. This news would keep me perked up for quite some time. Having Ty close would be amazing. Not that his condo was far, but we could walk to see one another now.
His nose scrunched. “It’s a mess inside.”
“Do you know how incredible this is?” I jumped on my bed like a monkey, going from worrying about Mom to excitement faster than a meteor zooming across the sky. I blamed the lack of sleep for zinging all over the place.
“I knew you’d be excited, but not like this.” He chuckled as my movements made his body bounce around.
“Ty, it’ll be like when we were kids!” We could run over after work each night to make dinner together. Or go for a walk. Or take the kayaks out on the lake. “Just warn me if you have a girl over. I do not want to walk in on you.”
“Ha,” he blurted. “Considering things aren’t working out in that department, you won’t have to worry about it.”
“Are you finally going to end things with Lys?” I hit his leg with my foot.
“Yes,” he said matter-of-factly. His eyes met mine briefly before fluttering to the ceiling.
“It’s for the best.”
He rubbed a hand over his face. “I know, but how do you tell someone you spent months with that you don’t love them? How do I tell her I’m sorry I wasted her time? I wanted to like her more, but I just can’t because there’s someone else.”
Say what?!? That familiar pang of longing wrenched my heart. Why wasn’t it ever me? I shoved the thought aside, locking it in the tower, and faked enthusiasm.“Someone else?Who?”
He shook his head. “Let’s discuss that later.”
I frowned. “Now, please.”
“One thing at a time, woman. Let’s get back to Lys.”
Grrr. “As much as it’s going to hurt, prolonging it will be worse. For both of you.”
He sat up. He fixed his agonized gaze on mine. “I know. And I will. It’s just going to suck. I’m a jerk.”
“Yeah, a little bit.” I wrinkled my nose at him. “You should have told her before now. But we all make mistakes. Telling her the truth will be painful, but I promise it will all work out.”
He looked at his lap. “How do you know it will be okay?”
I squeezed his shoulder. “I’m not sure. I just have this feeling that it will.”
“I hope so.”
“Now, who is this other woman? Someone I know? Someone from work?” I raised my brows repeatedly. Dang it. Ty worked with a lot of gorgeous women at his firm.
“I’m afraid to tell you,” he said sheepishly.
My cheek burned as if he’d slapped me. Scaredto tell me? I was his best friend. He could tell me anything and I’d still love him.
