Libby raised an eyebrow. “You still wish he was here, though.”

Her friends knew her well.

“I do. But I’m gladI’mhere. Does that make sense?”

“It does,” Char answered, bumping her with her shoulder playfully.

“And I’m so glad you guys are here. It reminds me of when I’d share the latest installment on the doomed twins gymnastic saga with you.”

“They broke every bone in their bodies. Dark stuff, Penn,” Harper teased as Libby’s jaw dropped.

“What is it?” Penny asked. “You know that was fiction, Libbs!”

“When was the last time you talked to the doomed twin gymnasts?” Libby asked with a stupefied expression.

“Claudia and Diana?”

“Yeah,” Libby answered.

Penny shrugged. “When we were in the coffee shop. Why would you ask?”

Now Harper’s jaw dropped. “And your mom? When was the last time you talked to her?”

Penny’s gaze bounced between her friends. “The night she returned from her trip to visit my sisters. Why?”

“Did you ask them to come to the contest?” Harper continued.

What?

Penny barked an incredulous laugh. “Um, no! I’m heartbroken, but I haven’t completely lost my mind.”

“Turn around, Penn,” Libby instructed.

Penny peered over her shoulder to find her mother flanked by Diana and Claudia.

“Pardon me! I’m looking for my daughter!” Beatrice Fennimore chimed.

What the hell were they doing here?

Her mother caught her eye and slid past a cluster of men. “Penelope, we’re here!”

Penny glared at her friends. “Who called my Mom?”

“I didn’t!” H whispered as Bea’s voice grew closer.

“Libby? Charlotte?” Penny pressed.

“Not me, Penn!” Libby answered.

“Charlotte?” Penny pegged the redhead with her gaze. “Was it you?”

“I didn’t say anything!” Charlotte replied, then pretended to zip her lips closed.

“They did know about the contest, right?” Libby asked.

Penny did another family crasher check. She only had seconds before the overachieving Fennimore trio reached them. “Yeah, and I told my sisters I’d let them know how it goes. I never asked them to travel from New Zealand and Switzerland to watch. And my mom…well, you know how she feels about my writing.”

“Gird your loins,” H said under her breath, making crazy eyes.
