“Hmm? Oh! Sorry, what’s up?”

Her eyebrow raises, and her fiery red ponytail swishes from side to side as she eyes me. “You were thinking about sex, weren’t you?”

“What?! No! Sex? What’s that? I?—”

“Mhmm, very convincing. So are you and Jules…?”

I stare at her. “Are me and Jules what?”

Her eye roll could move mountains. “Fucking, Thea. Are you and Jules fucking?”

I know my face is on fire so I turn around and pretend to be very busy doing… only there’s nothing for me to do except help Cole. I whip back around, ready to get us back on track.

Cole is standing there, hip cocked, finger tapping her chin. “So, that’s a no. But you want to be.”

“I-I-I can’t. We can’t! I’m pregnant.”

Cole’s exasperation is palpable. “Which means obviously you can.”

“It was just supposed to be a one time thing!” I cover my face and slump down to the ground.

“They say all it takes is once.” The sarcasm in her voice eases some of my tension.

I drop my hands and stare up at the ceiling. “Jules is almost too perfect. He cooks, he gardens, he plays an instrument. He and Chloe get along great. He bought Cat an entire scratch-post village. He wants to go to doctors appointments and be involved in the pregnancy. It’s driving me crazy.”

I’m met with silence after this little rant. When I finally look over at Cole, her eyes are narrowed into slits. “Did you hear all of the words that just came out of your mouth? You are saying the man istooperfect?”

“Have you seen his tattoos? The man bun? No one single person should be that hot and kind and talented. It’s not fair!”

“So, let me get this straight, you aren’t sleeping with Jules because he’s the perfect male specimen?” She asks the question with the silentAre you an idiot?left off the end.

“Correct.”

“I mean, it’s not the choice I would make, but…”

Groaning, I go full starfish on the floor. “What if I’m not perfect and all I do is fuck up relationships and maybe I don’t want to do that with someone who is going to be in my life, well… forever!”

Cole takes pity on me, crossing over and taking a seat. “Just because Chloe’s sperm donor is a douche canoe that wouldn’t own up to his part in her creation, doesn’t mean all guys are like that. I’ve known Jules since high school, and he’s always been a good one. Yes—” She holds up her hand to stop me from interrupting. “It is annoying. The man should have at leastoneflaw. But as far as I can tell, he doesn’t. And even if it didn’t work out romantically between the two of you, he would never let that affect his relationship with his child.”

She’s right. I know she’s right. And I do want Jules, I just don’t know how to go about that.

Cole pats my leg, effectively ending our heart to heart. “I’ve got to go, I have a date tonight.”

“With Ben?”

She makes a face as if to convey that she’d rather have a date with the piece of gum stuck on the sidewalk out front.

“Ew. No. Why would you ask that?”

Smiling, I say, “He seems to seek your approval like a puppy dog looking for scratches.”

“He can scratch his own ass,” she mutters.

“This feels like a ‘you’re not fucking but you want to be’ type of situation,” I challenge.

The eye roll is back. “Bye, Thea! Off to go get ready for my date with Garrett—not Benjamin. See if I come back to help again after that sass.” She waggles a finger in my face for good measure.

“Bye,Collette! Good luck!”
