She’s beautiful! Congratulate the family for me.

Another picture comes through, this time of Bex, Anders, and baby Molly. Mom and dad are beaming at each other, and without ever having met them in person, I can tell their love is different. Seems like it runs in the Bardot family after seeing the way Elaine and Hugo interacted, as well.

Dad never got over Mom’s passing—never moved on to another partner. I don’t blame him at all. From the stories he tells occasionally, they were soulmates. One doesn't move on from that easily. The result, unintended or not, was that I never got to see what a healthy partnership looked like, first hand.

Do they always look at each other like that?

Jules

Yes. I think I’m supposed to say it’s sickening, but I’ve always admired their relationship.

Jules isn’t afraid to have his own opinions about things. He may be quiet, but I’m learning he likes to vocalize things that are important to him.

I think I miss you.

Jules

I know I miss you.

I bite my lip and smile down at my phone, debating what to say next. Cat butts his head up against me, so I decide to send Jules a picture of the two of us.

Cattington also misses you, but he’d never admit it

Jules

Nah, Cat only has eyes for Chloe now. I’m old news.

Well, you are old…

Jules

I’m 30, Thea. Not dead.

Does it ever bother you how young I am?

Jules

No.

I huff a laugh at his directness. Well that answers that.

You were driving before I could even sit in the front seat of the car

I bet you haven’t even seen some of my favorite TV shows because you were too old for them by the time I started watching

Jules

We can watch them together.

I’ll watch your old people shows with you, too. I feel like you are the kind of person who would watch a nature documentary

Jules

What if I am? Are you bothered by how old I am?

I think about his question and watch as the three dots appear and disappear several times before Jules’ next text comes through.

It’s a grandpa emoji.
