Idk, that took you a while to find
Jules
Spell the words out, Rosie girl. Your old man needs it.
Rosie?! I’ve never had a nickname before. Thea is kind of hard to shorten. I stare at my phone, blushing furiously.
Yes, sir.
Jules
I like that too much.
I need to run. Can I call you later?
Now we have to talk on the phone? Ugh
Jules
I’m taking that as a yes. Talk to you soon.
“Your face is so red, Mama.”
My phone nearly flies out of my hand. “Holy shhhandwiches. Holy sandwiches. You scared the?—”
“The turkey out of you?” Chloe finishes.
I laugh. “Yes, my little chicken. You scared the turkey out of me. Ready to go register for kindergarten?”
“WOO kingergarten,” she yells, mispronouncing the word.
Seems like my chicken is ready to fly the coop.
Molly is just as cute as her sister, and I’m glad that I could be here for Bex and Anders to help with their transition to a family of four, but, damn—I miss my own little family.
A picture comes through my phone of Chloe manhandling Cat. My cheeks hurt from how much I’ve been smiling lately. Thea has been sending me updates of their whereabouts throughout the day, and I’ll admit, it’s helping a bit.
Today is Bex and Molly’s last day at the hospital before they are discharged tomorrow. Mom is going to stay with them a bit longer, but I’ll head back once the family is reunited at their apartment.
Bex and Molly are both sleeping—at least I thought they were until I hear Bex ask, “Why are you smiling at your phone?”
“Why aren’t you asleep?” I respond.
“Your happiness woke me up.”
“I actually don’t thinkthat’s possible.”
I can tell I’ve irritated a woman already deprived of rest. “Just answer the question, JuJu,” she snaps.
“Thea sent me a picture,” I respond.
That immediately gets a reaction out of Bex. Wiggling her eyebrows, she asks, “Ohhh a sexy picture? How bold of her.”
My head falls back onto the uncomfortable hospital couch. “God, no.” I cover my eyes. “A picture of her child with our cat.”
“Our,is it?” Bex muses.
Out of anyone, the cat probably belongs to Chloe most, but I don’t correct my sister.
