“Incident #7: Flinging myself against a window after being top nude in front of Matt.”

A lot of these involved Matt too...

“And alas. Incident #8: Calling an unknown number and videochatting with a stranger while I got skeeted on by two freaks. Which obviously I made up. Because that was the conclusion we mutually came to.”

I laughed and turned around.

“No, don’t look at me.” She closed her eyes like that would somehow make me close my eyes too.

“Ash?”

She scrunched up her face to close her eyes even more.

“Baby.” I put my hands on either side of her face.

She slowly opened one eye and squinted at me.

“I love you.”

“Even after everything I just said?”

“I mean...I do have questions. What exactly do you mean by raping? Because honestly it’s incredibly hard to rape a man. Unless we’re talking about a fold it up and shove it in kinda scenario...”

“I know, right?! I’m always talking about folding it up and shoving it in. But I didn’t do that with Dr. Lyon’s. It was more of a groping... You know what? No. You’re not allowed to ask questions. We’re in the middle of a romantic date. So...stop it.”

I couldn’t stop smiling. What kind of person kept track of all their most embarrassing moments in such a way? I smiled harder. My kind of person. And she was never going to hear the end of this. But...we were on a romantic date.

“Do you want to go up?” I gestured to the Eiffel Tower.

“Isn’t it closed? It’s like 1 in the morning.”

“It is. But Nigel built a secret entrance into it.”

“Nigel did what now?”

I grabbed her hand to guide her to the tower. “He built a secret entrance into it. When we lived here in the 1880s, Nigel worked on new tech to show off at the 1889 Exposition Universelle. But when they announced that the theme was a celebration of the centenary of the French revolution, he got super pissed.”

“Because they’d killed his lover Marie Antoinette?”

“Precisely. Anyway, he came up with this big plan to blow up the Eiffel tower, so he helped design a secret entrance into it. But then once they actually built it, he thought it was so beautiful that he couldn’t bring himself to do it.”

“Wow, okay. And what were you doing during that time?”

“Running the Orient Express.”

She looked up at me. “For real?”

It was fun finally getting to talk about all this with someone other than Nigel. And Jacob on occasion. But he’d grow up and just think it was all pretend. “Yup. It was the perfect way to take frequent trips to the near east to look for ancient magic that might free me from my curse. Alas, I came up empty. But I did make a small fortune in the process. Ah, here we are.” I pressed a button and opened a secret elevator into the Eiffel Tower.

“I can’t believe this is happening.” She stepped inside and we rode to the top. “Wow.” She stared out at the beautiful view of the Champ de Mars gardens.

But I was too busy staring at her.

“What is this?” She walked over to a table with some champagne and cheese. There was a wrapped present waiting for her. “Is this for me?”

“Like you said...it’s closed right now to everyone else.”

She was smiling so hard.
