“He has a thing for redheads,” said Matt. “Because of Scarlett.”
Ah. Right.
“But Axel is her boyfriend.” Jacob’s little shoulders slumped.
I hated when he looked sad. And no one should be sad at a cricket match. Unless you were rooting for the losers. “Don’t you worry about that, grandson. They’re young. It probably won’t last.”
“But what if it does?” he asked.
“Then the old saying holds true,” I said. “Hoes before bros.”
“What?” Matt looked at me like I was crazy. “That’s not the saying, man. And don’t say that to Jacob anyway.”
Brooklyn laughed.
“Is that not the saying?” I shrugged.
Nigel leaned forward. “I also think that is the saying.”
“It’s not,” said Matt.
“Then what is it?” asked Nigel.
“I think it’s the opposite,” said Brooklyn. “Bros before hoes.”
“There’s no way it’s bros before hoes,” said Nigel. “Hoes always win.”
“Would everyone stop saying hoes in front of my beautiful baby girl?” Matt lifted Chloe out of Brooklyn’s arms and held her protectively against his chest. “Don’t listen to them,” he whispered down at her.
“But I think that hoes...” started Nigel.
“No,” said Matt. “Stop it. Can someone please explain this game to me?”
“I can, coach,” said Jacob.
I’d described the game to Jacob on the plane ride over. I was excited to see him explain it.
Jacob launched into a very accurate and detailed description. Innings, overs, wickets. He explained it all perfectly. He even remembered that you can’t be out leg-before-wicket if the ball is outside leg stump.
“I literally have no idea what any of that means,” said Matt.
“I thought you were a sporting man?” I said.
“I am.”
“Then how are you not getting this? Jacob explained it perfectly.”
“Yessie,” said Jacob. “I did. Any sporting man would get it.”
Damn right, grandson.
“I am a sporting man,” said Matt defensively. “But what the heck is a wicket? And why is it called an innings if there is only one of them?”
“You’re being very basic right now,” said Brooklyn.
“Right?” I leaned forward and lifted my hand for a high five.
She immediately high fived me with a laugh.
