I opened my mouth and closed it again.
“So...is that a yes?”
Who cared?Tanner hated my guts. And I had the plague. I’d never live to see Christmas. “Yeah, whatever.”
“Great.” He smiled and stood back up. “This is going to be great. Great,” he said again.
That was way too many greats. I saluted him with my spoon. “Great, boss. I mean fiancé.”
True Love - Chapter 12 – My Frosty Fiancé
One Month Later – Sunday – Christmas Eve, 2023
Ash
I was never actually going to do the fake fiancée thing.
But the next day I found a note from Tanner outside my door.
It said that he and Nigel had to leave town for a little while because “Santa needed his help.”
I hadn’t heard from him since.
For a whole month I waited for the plague to take me.
But my stupid lungs were too strong.
Tanner had left town. And I had to accept the fact that he wasn’t coming back. Even if he did return one day, it wouldn’t be for me. It would be for his grandson. Tanner loved that kid.
And he didn’t love me. That was clear.
It was over. And I’d agreed to a favor when I thought I was dying. I was trying to be a better person in my new life of solitude.
So now it was Christmas Eve and I was on a train with Mr. Frost.
The guy next to me coughed without covering his mouth.
Yay.Now I could get a new strand of the plague and try this death thing out again. Maybe I’d be better at it this time.
He coughed again.
Nope.I didn’t want it. I scooted closer to Mr. Frost and he smiled at me.
“I almost forgot,” he said and pulled a ring box out of his pocket. “I need you to wear this.” He handed me the box.
I opened it and stared down at the HUGE diamond.
“Ash, will you marry me?”
“Yes, sir.”
He laughed, pulled the ring out of the box, and slid it onto my ring finger.
I had no idea how he’d known my ring size, but it was the perfect fit. I stared down at it. A month ago, I thought Tanner would be giving one of these to me soon. I felt tears welling in the corners of my eyes.
“Do you like it?” Mr. Frost asked.
I nodded and blinked my tears away. “Yes, thank you.”
