Her eyes grew even rounder.
I unfolded it and stared at her. “But first...are you stalking me, baby?”
She suddenly looked a little less nervous. “You’restalkingme.”
“I mean...you just ran down the aisle to me.”
She laughed.
God, she looked beautiful. I couldn’t take my eyes off of her. I was so glad the dress fit her perfectly. She was radiant. “Actually, how about you say your vows first.” I folded up the sheet of paper and slid it back into my pocket.
Ash looked like she was going to pass out.
I cleared my throat. “I’m only jesting. We’ve actually already said everything we wanted to say earlier.” I winked at her.
She audibly breathed a sigh of relief.
I knew how much she hated public speaking. And today wasn’t about torturing her. It was about being...us.
“Oh,” said Ocelot. “There’s nothing at all you’d like to say?”
“Love you,” said Ash and punched me in the arm. And then she cringed.
I laughed. “Ash knows I’ve been waiting for centuries to find her.”
“What?” asked Ocelot.
“For what feels like centuries.”
“Actual centuries,” whispered Nigel behind me.
I shook my head and stared into Ash’s eyes. “You saved me.” From my curse. From continuing to live an empty life. She’d saved me from myself.
She smiled up at me. “Thank you for rubbing off on me.”
“Rubbing one off on you?” asked Ocelot.
“What? No. I mean...yes, he does that too. But I would have married him even if his thingy still wasn’t working.”
“Excuse me?” said Ocelot.
“Fires,” whispered Nigel.
“Ah!” yelled Ash. “Ocelot, Nigel, stop it. You’re being weird. No one is rubbing properly working things anywhere or causing fires. No incidents today, kind sirs.”
“Incidents?” asked Ocelot.
“No! No one is talking about those! They don’t matter. Matt and I are cool.”
“Huh?” Matt peered at Ash over top of Nigel’s head.
“Everyone stop looking at me!”
I laughed.
“I meant Tanner’s confidence was rubbing off on me. Which we discussed in private earlier.” She shook her head and then stared up at me. “Thank you for being unabashedly you. Always. It’s taught me to be...me. I’m so lucky to have met you.”
“To have stalked me, yes.”
