She turned to Habib. “I’d rather die than have to live without him.”

“Then you both shall die. Which is fitting I guess, if you think you’re soulmates.”

“Wait,” my father said and stepped in front of me. “Sultan, please. Turn him into a genie as punishment instead.”

Habib slowly nodded. “Sultan, he could be useful in our diplomacy with the French. His concern for true love would be very popular with Louis XIV. We could gain favor with the sun king.”

“Very well,” said the sultan and turned back to me. “And in the process, let’s see how much you really know about true love. Find 1001 cases of true love, and Sapphire can be all yours. And in the meantime, I’ll be happy to keep her company.”

Son of a bitch.I tried to take a step forward and the tip of the sword pierced my skin.

Sapphire sobbed as she was pulled back toward the sultan.

I’ll find 1001 cases of true love and come back to you. I promise.

Nigel ran into the room. “Sultan, your bath is ready.” He bowed deeply.

“Thank you,” said the sultan.

Nigel started to walk out of the room.

“Where do you think you’re going?”

Nigel turned around. He tried to blend into the wall but failed.

“I can’t have a snitch in my service,” said the sultan.

“But I...I was helping you, Master Sultan. I told on the bad man.” He pointed at me. “I told you everything I heard and saw while fetching your bath water at the river. I saved the day. I handed you the culprit in a golden tub.”

What the fuck?! That little shit! The sword dug deeper into my side.

The sultan shook his head. “No, you’re a snitch. And as I said, I can’t have a snitch in my service. You must learn to keep secrets. You are bound to serve this new genie loyally until his curse is lifted. Go annoy him instead.”

Ash

I opened my mouth and closed it again. There was a lot to unpack there. But first... “It was Nigel who double crossed you?!”

“That’s why I’ve tried to kill him so many times.”

I wasn’t aware of that. How many times had Tanner tried to murder Nigel exactly? I shook my head. It wasn’t important. Clearly it hadn’t worked. And damn, Nigel. He deserved to have attempted murders thrown at him. Tanner was in this mess because of him. Well, partly. It was also Tanner’s own actions. I was glad he hadn’t married Princess Karima though. That girl was a total bitch.

“I hated Nigel for years,” said Tanner. “But I’ve gotten over it. Although he sometimes takes that bit in the command about annoying me instead too seriously for my liking.”

I think Nigel liked to do that to everyone he met.

“We’re friends now, of course. It’s hard not to be when everyone else around us...leaves.”

I pressed my lips together. I hated how sad he sounded.

“But Nigel has made it up to me over the years.”

“What about Sapphire? Did you make your way back to her?” Seeing Tanner’s memories was painful. He loved Sapphire. Truly. So no wonder he believed in there being more than one true love match for someone. He had to. Or else he’d never experience it again.

“No, I didn’t. I was stuck in Louis XIV’s court for a few years, but he threw me out after I told him that he didn’t have true love with his newest lover. I had to flee to the new world.”
