Eventually, we pile back into our cars and head to the hotel hosting the prom. We can't stay tonight, I've still got a curfew. I don't care though—RJ's hand is in mine, and that's all that matters.
We dance to everything—the slow songs where he holds me close and whispers sweet things in my ear that make me blush, and the fast songs where we jump around like idiots with our friends. During one particularly energetic song, he spins me around so fast that I get dizzy and fall against him, laughing.
"I love this," I tell him as we sway to a slower song, my head resting on his shoulder.
"What? Dancing?"
"This. Us. Everything." I pull back to look at him, my heart so full it feels like it might burst. "I love you, RJ. I love you so much it scares me sometimes."
His eyes go soft, and he cups my face in his hands. "I love you too, Montgomery. More than music, more than anything."
"Do you think..." I start, then stop, suddenly shy.
"What, baby?"
"Do you think we'll always be like this? Do you think we'll make it?"
He's quiet for a moment, just looking at me with those intense dark eyes. "I know we will," he says finally. "You're it for me, Montgomery. You're my person. One day, I'm going to marry you."
My breath catches. "Really?"
"Really. I've never been more sure of anything in my life."
I stand on my tiptoes and kiss him, right there in the middle of the dance floor, not caring who sees. "Good," I whisper against his lips. "Because I want to marry you too. I want forever with you."
The rest of the night passes in a blur of dancing, laughter, and stolen kisses. When they announce the prom king and queen, we cheer loudly for Skylar and her date when they win. During the last dance of the night, RJ holds me close and sings along softly in my ear, his voice sending shivers down my spine.
"Ready to head home?" he asks when the music finally stops.
"With you? Always."
As we walk out to the parking lot, hand in hand, I can't help but think that this is what happiness feels like. This perfect moment, with this perfect boy, at the start of what I know will be a perfect life together.
Chapter 8
RJ (Age 19)
Orange Beach, AL
Being on vacation with the family used to be one of my favorite things, but these days I prefer to be with Montgomery, especially since Grey Skies will be going on tour soon. I want to spend as much time with her as I can.
"Don't you wanna come with us today?" My dad asks, as we all sit at the table, eating breakfast.
"No," Montgomery answers. "We're going parasailing today, and no one can talk us out of it."
Under the table, I reach over and squeeze her thigh. Both of us want just a little bit of time alone, and we haven't been able to have any of that since we showed up here three days ago. "Yup, we're gonna have a good time."
"I'm too old for that shit," Jared says, as he glances over at his wife. "Y'all have fun."
I glance over at Montgomery. "Oh we plan on it."
After we finish our breakfast, our parents break off, and EJ goes to hang out with a friend he brought on the trip. I don't care about any of that, all I want is to spend time with Montgomery. We walk out onto the beach, toward the dock. "Are you sure about this?" I ask her.
"Yes, I can't wait to do this with you."
I can't either. "I want to have every adventure with you." I say, stopping us in the middle of the sand, hooking my hand around her neck, and pulling her into my kiss. It goes on for longer than it should, but when we break apart, she smiles.
"I want every adventure with you, too."
