Cody meets my eyes, and I can see my own distress reflected in them.
We’ve just given our parents another arena to battle in. Fantastic.
Half an hourafter I get home, I get a message from Cody.
that was shit what happened between your mum and my dad
I twist my phone in my hands as I decide how to reply. Do I want to start a conversation about the crap we’re going to have to deal with at some point? Instead, I go for a different angle.
good news is we can’t repeat our parents’ history
what do you mean?
you can’t impregnate me so you won’t have to give up your music career to support me and our child
Cody’s reply comes back almost immediately.
knew there was an upside to liking boys
yeah don’t forget it
Chapter26
On Wednesday, Cody turns up at my house for our usual tutoring session. He doesn’t say anything regarding his dad’s comments about tutoring me, and I don’t mention it either.
I can feel the combined weight of our parents’ disapproval hanging over both of us though.
Our tutoring sessions have now moved into my bedroom because they’ve become a combination of tutoring and making out. I guess I’m getting a biology lesson either way. I definitely prefer the practical lessons where I have my hands on Cody’s body.
We don’t fool around the entire time though, because Cody’s even more committed to me doing well in biology than I am.
“So, you just have to decide whether the mutation means that particular triplet will now code for a different amino acid,” he says, pointing to a table in the textbook.
“Yeah, I see.” I lean over and nudge my nose at the spot just behind his ear, which I know drives him crazy.
“And if it codes for a different amino acid, then it’s likely the mutation will affect the organism.”
“Right.” I continue with my nudging.
He throws his pen down. “Are you paying attention to what I’m saying?”
“I’m multitasking,” I say.
“Multitasking, huh?”
“Yeah, I’m a great multitasker.” I press my lips softly to that same spot.
He sucks in a deep breath then spins around to capture my mouth in a lazy kiss.
But things between Cody and I never stay in lazy mode. They make the quantum leap to hot and heavy incredibly quickly.
I’m so caught up in kissing him, I don’t hear footsteps on the stairs or that creaky floorboard outside my room that usually gives warning that someone is approaching.
Suddenly the door is edging open.
Cody and I jump apart.
But from the expression on Mum’s face as she stands in my doorway, I don’t think our reflexes were quick enough.
