“I use hare spray.”

He laughed even as he shook his head. “I swear your jokes have gotten worse. I didn’t think that was possible.”

“Well, I’m a dad now, and everyone knows dads have permission to tell the worst jokes.”

“Fuck, the last thing you needed was permission to tell more bad jokes.”

“I’ve got another one for you.”

A smile licked at the corners of his mouth. “I’m bracing myself.”

“What do you get when you pour boiling water into a rabbit hole?

“What?”

“Hot, cross bunnies.”

This time Luke’s laugh was so loud it rang across the backyard. I glanced around. Both Char and Jonathan were staring at us, Jonathan frowning as if we were a puzzle he couldn’t quite work out, while Char’s face… I sucked in a breath.

Holy shit.

There was only one word to describe her expression.

Devastated.

But when I blinked, her expression was back to normal. What the hell? Had I just imagined that look on her face?

“So, are you the one who hid the Easter eggs?”

I snapped my attention back to Luke. “Are you trying to get insider knowledge about where they’re hidden?”

“Maybe.” The best Luke smiles were the ones where his eyes joined in. Just like now.

“I’m willing to entertain bribes,” I said. “What are you prepared to offer me?”

Shit. It was only after the words had left my mouth that I realized they sounded slightly creepy.

But Luke just grinned, his eyes warm.

Happiness flowed through me.

Because standing in the sun, shooting the shit with Luke, everything seemed right in the world.

Chapter14

Luke

When someone was dressed from head-to-toe as an Easter bunny and you still found them sexy, you knew you had issues.

Although I had more issues than a potential bunny-fetish. Because I wasn’t supposed to be finding Ethan sexy at all.

I definitely wasn’t supposed to be finding Ethan sexy when my boyfriend was right across the lawn.

I ripped my eyes away from Ethan, trying to calm myself down. I glanced over to where Jonathan was helping Char tie balloons onto the backs of some lawn chairs.

My smart, kind, helpful boyfriend who I was so lucky to have. I needed to make sure I never forgot that.

“This is a lot of effort for an Easter egg hunt,” I said as I took in the decorations in Ethan’s backyard. “Theo’s a lucky kid.”
