I shrug and walk over to the chair and dump my ass in it.“Can we focus on the issue at hand here?I had no clue Evina had a grandson, and she cut off all contact years ago so she might not have known either.I know for a fact Trent was her maiden name.Vance must have his father’s last name.”

Three bobbing heads is what I get in reply.

“Now Vance is back to take his mother’s belongings?”Abbott asks.“Didn’t you mention you inherited the house and that it was fully paid for?”

Now I’m the one bobbing my head.“She disowned him and put my mother and me as the legally entitled ones who inherit everything after she dies.My mother is dead, and I’m the only one left.”

“Everything’s official?”Layton asks.

“Yes.She mentioned it to me after we received the bad news that they couldn’t do anything for her.She made me promise to take care of Mina and told me where I could find all the legal papers. After she died there were a lot of arrangements.I didn’t think about the house, other than to keep living here and taking care of Mina. With Vance showing up...I don’t know.”

“Call the club lawyer,” Abbott tells Layton.“Have him look into this so we’re prepared.”He directs his attention to me.“If Evina put this in black and white there’s no way Vance can take the house away from you and Mina.”

I nod warily and drop my head, hoping he’s right.

“Hey.”He gently pinches my chin and tips my head slightly back.“I’m serious. We’re all here for you to make sure Evina’s wishes stay intact, okay?Vance needs to fuck off and stay gone.”

The slight undercurrent of “or I’ll make sure he does,” rings loud in Abbott’s voice.I still can’t believe he killed Evina’s grandson. Why did he?He went to prison a little over a year ago.I remember because I had a tough time with my mother dying, while Delcy went through this with her brother.

It would explain why none of the names, or the why and how he was thrown in prison, slipped from my mind.

I should at least give Abbott the benefit of the doubt.

“Okay,” I murmur.

“Okay,” he echoes, promising me the help I just accepted.

CHAPTER SIX

Four days later

– ABBOTT –

Done with drying off my body, I wrap the towel around my waist and step out of the bathroom.

“Meow.”
