CHAPTER SEVEN
–RYETT –
It’s been a hell of a day.Sure, it kicked off nicely with seeing Abbott completely naked.Hard inked muscles on show with a delicious trail down from his navel to where his dick was nestled in a neatly trimmed patch of dark hair. And why am I thinking about this now?
I tighten my arms around Abbott’s waist. After ignoring him for the past few days I’m extremely happy he wanted to go on a date, even if the date was simple and low-key.The burger place he took me to was a small and cozy place, the burger along with the fries, were amazing.
The bike is vibrating underneath us, forcing me to concentrate on things other than the day I had.I kept pushing it forward, but the probate lawyer, who will make sure Evina’s estate is handled correctly and lawfully, called again and wanted me to come to his office.
When she was still alive, she mentioned leaving the house to me, to take care of her cat, but hearing what she left me?Speechless.I literally had no words.Evina had a lot of money and here I thought she wasn’t rich at all.And if she had all that money? Why not spend it all?
Okay, I can answer those questions myself since the last few years her anxiety developed to new levels. She used to tell me stories about her mother who would hide behind the corner of a building if she saw someone familiar.
Her mother didn’t want to talk to anyone, just wanted to live her life.Evina was like that and never even left the house unless I dragged her to appointments. She also used to freak out when the doorbell rang. These little things were all her choice of living her own life.I never judged her for it, but I sure as hell tried to help her in any way I could.
I feel Abbott pat my thigh and I realize we’ve come to a stop in front of the house.Dammit.The whole ride home was a blur because I was drifting off inside my head.
“Can we go for another ride tomorrow?”I ask while Abbott helps me off the bike.
Abbott’s chest rumbles with a chuckle.“Already addicted?”
“My mind was a thousand miles away.I felt like I blinked and the ride was over way too soon.”I can hear a slight whine in my own voice.
Abbott pulls me close and places a soft kiss on the top of my head.“Any day, any time.Just let me know and we’ll ride, okay?”
“Thank you.”Releasing a sigh, I’m about to snuggle closer when the sound of a car approaching grabs my attention.
I turn while Abbott curses and see the reason why when the sheriff’s car pulls up right next to us.
“What the hell is he doing here?”Abbott grumbles.
“I have no clue,” I muse, and a shot of adrenaline hits me.“Hopefully there’s nothing wrong with Delcy.”
Abbott shakes his head.“If there was something wrong with my sister, Layton or one of my other club brothers would be here.”
Vance steps out of the sheriff’s car along with the sheriff.
“Oh, fuck no,” Abbott growls.
After the day I had?I should have seen it coming.Though, I’m surprised Vance managed to involve his brother-in-law in this.
“Please leave,” I tell the both of them once they’re close.
“You’re the one who’s going to leave,” Vance snarls.“This house is mine.Everything belongs to me and you’re trespassing.”
The sheriff throws a dark look Vance’s way.“Let’s all stay calm. We’re here to talk about things in a civil matter.”
“There’s nothing to talk about,” Abbot grunts.“Vance should have been a better person to his mother when she was still alive. Then he might have a reason to be at the meeting Ryett had with the lawyer this morning.”
The sheriff’s attention slides to me.“Lawyer appointment?I thought Evina didn’t have a will?”
“She did,” I state.
If Vance was a decent human being and had not stolen on a regular basis from his mother, gotten clean and visited her over the years...never mind. His actions led to this moment right here.At any time he could have reached out, changed his ways, and yet he never did.
“Is Vance mentioned in the will?”the sheriff asks.
At least I can manage not to snort, and it’s Abbott who says, “Evina disowned Vance a long time ago.She left everything to Ryett, who cared for her till the end.”
