I let my head tip back and bark out a laugh.

Shaking my head, I connect my gaze with hers and tell her, “You’re so fucking strong holding your ground through everything life throws at you.Your lifeline is made from pure lava and simply eats through every bullshit in your path. Then, after the havoc your past becomes your fertile soil for a better future.”

I have no clue where those words came from. This woman brings out emotions, feelings, thoughts, ramblings, she manages to rip me right open and stare into the core of what I’m made of.There is no need to hide who I am, or act differently to make her like me.

Ryett is an open and honest person.A friend, a lover, a strong partner I want at my side, an old lady.We already committed to dating, a relationship. It’s still too early to throw out a claim and yet I’ve known since the moment I buried my cock inside her.

I’ll remind her soon enough of the fact that she’s my old lady.

For now, we have to deal with the sheriff who calls out for us.The intensity of the moment between us is broken for now as we head for the front door.

CHAPTER NINE

–RYETT –

I rub my arms and stare out the window. We’re in the living room, and it’s been well over an hour since the kitchen window was shattered.I want nothing more than to get dressed and head to the bookstore.Work.I can manage work and not think about anything else.

Abbott and I have explained everything to the sheriff. He’s seen the kitchen and has checked out the backyard. There’s a guy out there right now who is making casts of footprints and has bagged the brick for evidence.

“Are we done here?”Abbott’s voice drags my attention to him.

The sheriff nods and puts his notepad away.“For now.If I have any questions, I’ll swing by.If there’s anything else I can do for you two, let me know.”

“Are you going to arrest him?”I question.

“My deputies are already looking for him. It’s going to be difficult to find him, though. He lost his apartment last month. My sister divorced him a few months before Pete...it was the drugs. They were both using, and she gave them an ultimatum.Everything went downhill since then.I tried to help Pete, thought he’d better his life.”The sheriff shakes his head.“Maybe if I intervened sooner you wouldn’t had to retaliate, and Gracie would still be alive.”

Abbott steps closer to me and holds out his hand to pull me against his body.

He places a possessive hand on my hip when he says to the sheriff, “Regrets and what-ifs won’t change the past. The only solution is to learn from mistakes, and hard as fuck experiences, to act differently.”

Abbott’s phone gives a notification of an incoming message. He takes it out and glances at it while the sheriff is focused on his own phone.

Both curse simultaneously.Abbott turns the screen to me so I can read the message Layton sent. The words enter my brain, and they are processed, but there’s no reaction.None.I just feel numb.

“Did you get the same information?”Abbott rumbles.
