Mina is eight years old, and it was me who saw the ad about rescued kittens eight years ago.Evina mentioned lots of times how she hated the silence around the house after her dog died. She loved animals, and when I showed her the picture of the kittens she instantly fell in love.

My phone starts to ring and when I pick up, it’s Delcy again.

She instantly starts to ramble with a cheerful voice, “My brother is coming home! Can you believe it?He’s out.Seriously.Freed on a technicality. They overtured his conviction.”

I don’t know Delcy’s brother, Abbott, personally. She’s told me enough about him, including the fact that he’s a biker in the same motorcycle club as her boyfriend, Layton, or old man, as she calls him.

“Really?”My voice is as cheerful as hers, feeling the happiness run through me for my friend.“That’s fantastic.Do you need me to take over the store so you can leave to pick him up?”

“No, no, it’s all good.Layton already left to pick him up.I do have a huge favor to ask, though.Well, it might also solve some of your issues as well. So, it’s more like a package deal we’d be making,” she rambles.

“Anything,” I tell her honestly.

Not only is she my one and only friend, but she’s literally the only person I have left who I share a connection with on a personal level.

“Can Abbott rent a room in your mansion on the hill?I’d offer him my couch, but you know Layton is renovating the living room for me, and–”

Mansion, I snort and make a split decision.

Cutting her off, I tell her, “I have enough space. It’s fine.”

I might have never met Abbott, but I’ve known Delcy for years. She’s been dating Layton for about a year now, ever since her brother was charged with murder.I don’t know all the details since it was around the time my mother died, and those weeks were a blur for me.

Anyway, Layton treats Delcy like a queen. He’s a biker in the same MC, and I’ve met a few of the other bikers as well, all polite, nice, and friendly. With my friend being there for me when I need her the most? The least I can do is offer her brother a room to crash in for a few days.

“You rock,” Delcy squeaks.“I’m gonna call Layton right now and let him know.Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

“All good.”A smile tugs my lips to hear the relief and happiness in her voice.

“I’ll swing by once the store is closed, okay?”she assures me.

“Sounds good.See you later.”I end the call and keep petting Mina.

Delcy might have talked about Abbott on more than a few occasions over the years, but I haven’t met him or so much have seen a single picture of the man.I did get a postcard from him once, after Delcy asked me to help with a project to fill the library at the local prison.Abbott loves to read so Delcy made it her mission to fight for more books for prisoners.

The thank you card I received from him was sweet and polite. He even gave me some recommendations for books to read.Romantic suspense and thrillers, all great reads.Who knows, after his stay here I might get another thank you postcard.

Better to focus on that than the fact that he was in prison, awaiting a trial on suspicion of murder, who got out on a technicality...right?
