Abbott gets to his feet.“Is it okay if I call Kevon and Oswin to get Ryett and bring her inside the house? Two of my club brothers are watching the house and the cat.I’m not liking her here in the cold, staring down a dead body. She’s been through enough already. They can also help clean the road of all the nails.”

“Of course,” the sheriff winces when he shifts to glance up at me.“I’m glad it’s over.He should have landed his ass in jail, but his own stupidity got him killed.”

I bob my head, not knowing what else to say because he’s right...everything leading up to Vance’s death is his own damn fault.

The door of the house opens and I feel Abbott nudge me forward.“Go on, get inside and make some tea or something.I’ll be right there, okay?”

“Okay,” I murmur and walk over to the house just as the sirens of the ambulance get closer.

The warmth of the house takes some of the chill away and I get my hands busy with making tea and coffee.Kevon and Oswin are keeping me company and each have a cup of coffee in front of them at the kitchen table.Mina bumps her head against my leg and purrs when I give her some attention.

A deep sigh flows from my chest as I lean against the counter and take a sip from my tea.

“Prez will be here in a few minutes,” Kevon states.“He just texted me.”

I glance in the direction of the door.“Why would he text you instead of coming inside after a few minutes?”

Oswin snickers.“Probably because the man has demanded updates by the second to make sure you’re alright.”

I can feel my eyes slightly widen but try to keep my reaction to myself.Sure, it’s a little bit obsessive and yet he makes me feel as if I’m the center of his world.

Turning in the direction of the coffee pot I tell Kevon, “Text Abbott to let him know his coffee will get cold if he doesn’t hurry up.”

Kevon gives me a huge grin.“Yes, ma’am.”

I take a seat at the kitchen table with Abbott’s mug.

A few heartbeats later Abbott stalks into the kitchen, pulls me flush against his body, and takes my face into his hands.“Everything okay?”

“Meow.”A furry ball jumps between us.

Laughter rips from me while Abbott curses and takes Mina in his arms. She bumps her head against his chin and starts to purr.He scowls at her but automatically starts to pet the cat.

“She likes you,” I state.

The corner of his mouth twitches.“All the females in this house do.”

A laugh bubbles from me.To be honest?I more than like him.He looks at ease in the kitchen as he sits down with the cat in his lap.Sipping coffee, he explains the turn of events with his two club brothers, and I find myself enjoying the company.

A few members of a new-found family right here in the kitchen of the house where only mere weeks ago lived the only person I considered family. My life has been graced with new people, opportunities, chances, a wide-open future, and a chance at love.

For the first time in a while I feel hope and warmth inside my body with a newfound strength. And I can’t wait to see what the future holds for all of us.
