CHAPTER TWO

–ABBOTT –

I hear the prison gate fall shut behind me.I close my eyes, tip my head back, and take a deep breath to fill my lungs with fresh air.Free.I’m standing on the other side of the damn gates, and I sure as fuck don’t want to go back inside any time soon.

I was charged with second-degree murder. They ruled it as not premeditated, because they couldn’t prove anything.I definitely planned it, though. The reason why I was locked up and awaiting trial was justified; I killed a man.

The scumbag deserved what he got, and I’d do it again without thinking twice.Maybe that’s why I’m standing on the other side of the gate.Karma.Do good and get something good in return, my freedom.

I snort at my own train of thought and open my eyes when I hear my vice president, Layton, rumble, “More than a year sitting your ass in jail awaiting trial.Thank fuck our lawyer filed a motion to vacate the second-degree murder conviction.Between bouncing you off to the wrong prison, the sheriff suddenly backing you up, and the judge dying?Dude, my mind can’t even wrap around that shit. How lucky are you?A free man.”

“Lucky enough,” I grunt and jerk my chin in the direction of the flatbed.“You brought my bike.”

Layton grins before he turns and gives a short whistle.

He snaps his fingers in the direction of the prospect.“Move your ass, get prez’s bike down.”

I can’t wait to ride home, even if it’s over a three-hour ride.Home.Shit.Before I went inside I had an apartment, along with a room at the clubhouse. With the months going by I asked my sister to sell my apartment. So, I don’t actually have a home.

“Any chance I can stay at the clubhouse?”I ask my VP.

Layton winces.“Sorry, Prez.We had to rip out the floor after the waterpipe burst.Too much water damage.Your sister found a solution for you, though.”

The fucker is now grinning ear-to-fucking-ear.

I narrow my eyes at the fucker.“Never mind.I’ll get a hotel room and figure something out in the morning.I’m not going to stay with my sister while you’re there under the same damn roof.”

Layton flips me off.“We’re not offering for you to stay at our place, asshole.I’m renovating the living room.We don’t have a couch or a bed for you to sleep on.”

“Hotel room it is,” I tell my VP and pat his shoulder.“How are you and my sister doing?”

“Claiming Delcy was the best decision I made in life. She made me work for it, but she’s definitely worth every bit of the hassle.Good thing her sass turns me on.”

Instead of patting, I shove his shoulder this time.“I could have done without the last sentence, fucker.”

He barks out a laugh.“Aren’t you glad we started something after you went inside? We basically saved you from seeing all the flirting, kissing, getting hot and half naked on the couch. We’re solid now.”

I take a step forward to get into his personal space and growl, “Be glad I went inside because I would have fucked you up for so much as looking in my sister’s direction.I’ve always said she was hands-off.You broke the rule, and you’re lucky she accepted your claim.VP or not, I wouldn’t have a problem with cutting off your cock, making you swallow it down, gutting you to find the limb, and making you eat it again until you bleed out.”

The man doesn’t so much as twitch and gives me a hard stare in return when he states, “Thanks for the visual, brother.Unnecessary, ’cause I’d never hurt the woman I love.”

We keep staring at one another.I knew my VP and my sister were seeing each other because my sister always gives it to me straight.I could have done something, even if I was behind bars.Layton might be the VP, but one of my club brothers would have followed my order if I gave one.Though, my sister made me promise not to say or do anything. She liked his attention and wanted to see if it had potential.I guess it did.

Taking a deep breath, I notice the prospect has my bike ready to go and stalk to it.The feeling of swinging my leg over the bike, sitting down and grabbing the handlebars?Indescribable.Freedom is hitting the road, wind in your face, and letting the bike eat away the miles.

Damn.If only I had a home to make a nice home-cooked meal, take a long hot shower, and watch some TV.

I’m not looking forward to staying in a hotel, and it’s why I ask, “What solution did my sister have for me?”

“Ryett.”Layton straddles his own bike.“She’s looking for someone to help her move shit around, fix issues around the house, and has a room you can crash in.”

“Ryett,” I muse, the name sounds familiar.

Strapping on my helmet, I suddenly remember.Ryett is my sister’s friend. She’s mentioned her more than a few times, but I’ve never met the woman. The last time Delcy talked about her was due to Ryett helping with the project to get books into the prison library. Not much to do in prison, and I like to read a good thriller, or a suspense novel every now and then.

My VP nods.“Wanna check it out or swing by the clubhouse first? Most of the brothers are working on the floor today.”
