Ryett gasps while Vance whirls around and rushes off.

Anger hits me.Did we not research enough?Did I just fuck Vance’s sister?

“You killed Evina’s grandson?”Ryett gasps.

Who the fuck is Evina?

CHAPTER FIVE

–RYETT –

This is not happening.Abbott killed Evina’s grandson, that’s how his ass landed in prison.I start to pace while a flow of questions flood my brain.Did Evina know she had a grandson? How old was he?Why did Abbott kill him?

I knew Evina had a son, but as soon as he turned eighteen, he moved out of the house. He came by a few times and it stopped when Evina found out he had stolen from her.Evina and I talked about Vance a few weeks before she died. She was very clear about no contact or letting him know after her death because she didn’t want him at her funeral.

My head is throbbing and I’m still pacing when Delcy is suddenly blocking my path.

I come to an abrupt stop and my eyes go wide.“When did you get here? But first of all, what are you doing here?”

“Abbott called me.He was worried because you started to pace and wouldn’t stop or respond to anything. What happened?”There’s concern on my best friend’s face.

Though, in this moment I can’t help but snap, “How dare you send your brother here to live with me?Did you know?Is this some twisted inside joke?”

“What the hell are you talking about?”She seems genuinely confused.

A sigh rips from me, my shoulders sag, and my voice cracks with emotion when I slowly repeat my question, “Did you know your brother killed Evina’s grandson?”

Delcy’s eyes widen.Confusion is suddenly replaced by shock.“No.You can’t be serious. No, no, no, you’re wrong.I would have known if it was Evina’s grandson. You, or Evina...either one would have said something.”She whirls around to face Abbott.“What the hell is going on?You didn’t kill Evina’s grandson, did you?”

Abbott throws his hands in the air.“Who the fuck is Evina?”

I narrow my eyes at the disrespect and stalk toward the man I just had sex with and punch my fist against his shoulder.“Evina Trent lived in this house for decades. My mother bought the house at the bottom of the hill when she was pregnant with me, and Evina has been in my life ever since. She was my babysitter, and later a good friend, until she passed away ten days ago.Her son, Vance, who was just here is an asshole.I’ve only met him a few times in the past since he’s way older than me, and Evina needed a restraining order against her own son.He stole from her constantly and changing the locks didn’t help shit.He hasn’t been around in...I don’t know fifteen years at least.”

“Thank fuck you’re not related to Vance,” Abbott mutters.

I gape at the idiot.“That’s all you have to say?”
