“Eek!” I screeched as I took a step back so I didn’t crash into the wall of muscled chest that blocked my path.

I’d almost forgotten how fast they could move.

His scent surrounded me. Leather and musk. Something rich and masculine that promised good times.

My eyes dropped and I swallowed hard.

At least his pants were on.

I glanced up shyly through my lashes.

He was so beautiful it hurt. Even when his gaze darkened. The turquoise blue broken with bits of green and gold swirled as his pupils slit into diamonds.

I never knew I had a thing for reptiles.

“Mate.” His deep and husky voice slid over my skin, drawing out a part of me I’d buried long before I did my dead husband.

“Yep,” I breathed out the word, cocking my head to the side as I stared up at him, knowing, without having the rationale to explain it. “It’s nice to meet you.”

I stepped back and held out my hand.

There was a tortured expression as he looked to my hand before he slipped it into his. Warmth spread at his touch. My heart slowed to a steady beat. The wind seemed to rustle through the brown grass of the field behind us, coaxing me to step forward.

Mine.I heard the word deep inside me even though it seemed to come from the wind itself.

Time came to a standstill.

If I were younger, I’d have wanted to paint this moment. To take a brush and capture the beauty of what looked like a romantic memory. But I gave up all that artistic stuff years ago, except for the box of crayons I shared with Harper.

Malachy raised my hand to his lips and pressed a kiss against my knuckles. His lips were soft compared to the roughness of his voice. “The pleasure is mine.”

First Impressions

The salt of her skin still burned my lips, igniting a hunger from my dragon. I wanted more. Her taste Her touch. Her satin softness pressed against me. To undo her golden hair from its confines and run my fingers through it. To devour her plump and pouty lips. To watch her eyes widen with desire. To see if I could wipe that prim and composed expression off her face.

You’ll destroy her.

I clenched my jaw, ignoring the truth of my beast.

I was an expert at denying myself anyway, so I slipped into the familiar torture of restraint as I walked alongside her, heading to Kieran’s house.

“What’s the verdict?”Lucan’s worried voice filled my mind through our familial link. I couldn’t see my brother or Kieran, but I sense them hiding somewhere behind closed doors, giving us a moment alone to play the game of fate.

I didn’t need more time.

I’d known before my dragon landed. The moment I caught wind of Willow’s scent. Midnight jasmine and silk. A coolingsoftness too rich for this desert wasteland. It buried itself in my scales, demanding I breathe it in.

Unworthy.

The thought was familiar, but my beast didn’t roar his opinion like normal. He was subdued. Waiting. Watching to see what would happen next.

“Aye. She’s my mate,”I told Lucan, knowing Kieran was listening in.

I blocked out their cheers of relief.
