Omph.Little arms wrapped around my leg, almost taking me down with her surprising strength.
Sobs wracked her body as she cried, “Thank you for saving me.”
“There, there.” I petted her head awkwardly, turning to the side as if that could hide my nudity as I looked to Lucan and Kieran for help.
Both of the idiots just stared at me wide-eyed and useless.
“I want my mommy.” Harper sniffled as she dragged her nose along my skin, leaving a trail of snot behind.
My dragon rumbled to soothe her as I scooped the little one into my arms. “I know, princess. Let’s get you home.”
“You’re my hero,” Harper mumbled as she snuggled against me. She was lighter than a feather. As delicate as a bird. Too trusting.
Careful or you’ll break her.
I nodded as I adjusted my grip, trying to figure out how best to fly.
Clapping sounded from above.
The three of us turned to what was left of the staircase that Earth hadn’t destroyed in her shake.
The female vampire that had disappeared earlier stood in the shadows of the doorway, looking down. Her silvery blonde hair hung in a braid past her shoulder. Ruby red lips smirked against her deathly pale skin.
“Bravo, guardian.” She continued the slow, dramatic clap. Her glowing red eyes seemed to narrow on Harper despite me trying to hide the girl in my arms. “And who is this?”
“She’s mine,” I growled, knowing I should’ve said so sooner. A dragon’s territory was untouchable. It never should’ve come to this. “But I don’t know who you are.”
Not that I would. It’d been years since I interacted with vampires or demons and I hadn’t much enjoyed when I did.
“I’m Sabine.” Her fangs glistened as she smiled. “Your newest fan.”
“I need no more fans.” I gathered the shadows closer as my wings stretched out to protect Harper from the vampire’s gaze. I’d get us out of here first and then figure out the best way to travel.
“I beg to differ.” Sabine was still smiling as I rose above her with Kieran and Lucan by my side. At least she stepped out of the way before I made her move, giving us room to exit as she misted back into the darkened study.
But her words lingered after she’d disappeared. “I think that after this, you’ll need all the support you can get.”

Second Chances
The most attractive thing I’d ever seen in my life was Malachy walking down the dirt road wearing ripped jeans with his bare chest and face splattered with dried blood as he carried my daughter in his muscular arms.
I would’ve worn the red dress—would have crawled on my hands and knees at his command and given him whatever he asked—because he’d brought my world back to me.
“Mommy!” Harper called out.
Malachy set her down and my brave, beautiful little girl came running.
Through the tears in my eyes, I tried to look her over, checking for any new cuts or marks. I knew every inch of her. Each little nick was a roadmap of our lives together.
“She’s unharmed.”Malachy spoke in my head as if he knew exactly what I was feeling.
I gathered Harper up and inhaled her scent, getting a faint whiff of that baby smell she’d grown out of.
“Thank you.”I smiled at Malachy over the top of Harper’s golden head before dipping my face down to hers.
