Everything…. Is Going to Be…

“Come to me.”

“Harper,” I whispered, searching the darkness of the bed.

“The babe is safe. I need you to come to me.”

The voice was soothing, but also confusing. It started talking to me when I was awake.

They told me I wasn’t supposed to listen.

I closed my eyes and began to hum.

“Every little thing, is going to be all right.”

A swirling turquoise eye rose from the ocean, watching me as I snuggled onto a chair at the beach with a Mai-Tai in hand.

Oh, never mind. I’m still asleep.

The sand fell out from under me and I reached for Malachy. The roar was a mourning sound full of pain as the waves crashed on the shore, swallowing the beach in foam.

The dragon’s cry followed me to the abyss, making me want to rip my own heart out and give it to him.

But I was in the hospital, still healing from emergency surgery, and the doctor said that was a bad idea.

“You’ve bled too much for them anyway.”That voice.

It was definitely feminine and angry.

I looked down to see my blood-soaked hospital gown. The bassinet next to the bed was empty.

“Sam!” I yelled, but he’d gone home to sleep.

It was a long night.

My mother’s face pressed against the glass, judging with her cross necklace in hand.

“We won’t let anyone in here you don’t want in. You just let me know what you need.”That voice again. It came from the female nurse at my bedside, but she was faceless and the voice wasn’t hers.

It was the voice of every female I’d ever met.

It was no one at all and all of them at the same time.

Earth spoke to me.

It’s just a dream.I closed my eyes because I really wanted to wake the fuck up right now.

But she wouldn’t let me go.

“Malachy!” I screamed, knowing he was the only one strong enough to deal with this.

“I’m here. Right here.” Strong arms wrapped me in their embrace.

Silver moonlight spilled over the bed and his handsome face as I looked up in his turbulent, jeweled eyes.

“I can’t wake up,” I whispered.

“You’re awake.” Concern marred his brow as he touched my face. “You’re feverish.”
