Deep breath, McClain, you’ve got this.
How many times would it take for Sammy’s voice to repeat that in my memory before I finally got it?
Sammy would’ve liked Remy and Ash, maybe even been friends with them. Those last few months he kept telling me I’d find love again and that all he wanted was for meto be happy. Before today, I hadn’t believed either was possible. Now, I knew it was.
Sammy may be gone, but he’s never far from mind, nor will he ever leave my heart.
Ash returned with our drinks, and I held mine up in a toast. “To new beginnings.”
They tapped their glasses to mine and repeated, “To new beginnings.”
Remy and I had just taken a drink when Ash asked, “What’s a threesome?” and we both started choking. I held my hand up, letting him know I’d answer as soon as I caught my breath, but Remy beat me to it. Thank the sexual gods for that one.
“It’s when three people have sex together at the same time.”
“My. He,” Remy pointed to Kit. “He-he did that? But he’s married to Nate.”
“I’m sure it was long before that. Your brother is a bit mischievous, is he not?” Even I’d gathered that much. Ash was far more reserved than Kit and clearly not versed in the ways of the world.
“He is, but my gosh.”
“Just out of curiosity, what do you think will happen when we get to that point in our relationship?” Remy asked him. “Two of us at a time while the other one waitsto be tagged in?” Not quite sure Remy’s wrestling match description was topic appropriate, but I think it got the point across.
“I-I guess I hadn’t thought that far ahead.” Ash’s red-hot blush was slightly alarming. If it darkened any further I’d call 9-1-1. “I mean, I suppose, but wouldn’t we be married first? Isn’t same sex marriage legal now?”
“They are, sweet boy, but triads or poly relationships aren’t allowed to marry. Only two people can legally. Will that be a problem for you, having sex outside of wedlock?” If it was, we were in for a grim awakening.
“What do they do if they can’t get married?”
“They have what’s called commitment ceremonies. Exchange vows in front of an officiant and their friends and each wears a ring symbolizing their commitment to one another. But there is no legal document attached to it.”
“Oh.”
This was going to be an interesting ride for sure.
“When do your families get here?”
“My mom and sister will be here Saturday,” Remy replied.
“Mine will be here Monday.”
Next week will be an interesting challenge. Hopefully no one upsets my boys with unkind words.
“My mom and my sister will be staying with me,” Remy added.
“My Mom and Dad are coming. They’re sleeping in my room at Kit and Nate’s and I’m gonna take the couch. It folds out into a bed,” Ash replied.
“Are you giving them any sort of heads-up with regard to our relationship?” The internal argument ofwhat do I say-what do I not sayhad waged war inside my brain.
They glanced at each other as I’d noticed they did when deciding what to say. Remy replied first. “Yeah, I better. I think mom would appreciate it if I did.”
“I’m not really sure. My parents were pretty open and accepting of the whole daddy thing with Kit but then again, he’s always been a bit of a rebel. With me, they were very surprised when I said I was staying last Christmas,” Ash paused. “Yeah, I probably should too. They will have a lot of questions, but if they’re too invasive don’t feel you have to answer them.”
“If they’re mature enough to ask, I need to return the same respect, though I may filter anything private between the three of us, if you get my drift.” Heaven help us if they wanted in-depth details.
“Is it okay if I stay here after dinner? I’ve been helping Kit and Nate close up every night so they can get homequicker.”
“Absolutely. That’s so kind of you, but aren’t you tired with working two jobs?” I really had to get our hours sorted. It wasn’t fair to either of us to keep working seven days a week. Besides, I’d love a free day to take them to the lake for a picnic or even to explore the next town over.
