“C’mon, there’s snacks and beer,” yelled McGaven. “And Katie, I see some presents that need opening.”
The noise level raised as everyone talked, laughed, and began preparing the food.
“This is a perfect time to catch up. C’mon,” said Katie to Lizzy, leading her out to the backyard and around the property to a circular trail. The air was chilly but they didn’t mind.
As Katie and Lizzy walked the trail, Cisco caught up and padded along easily, keeping them in sight.
“I can’t believe you got to keep Cisco. I’m so happy for you,” said Lizzy, smiling and watching the dog. “You two were the best team—at least in my opinion.”
“I don’t think I could have made the transition without him.”
Cisco did a spin around the women and trotted up the trail, checking out various bushes.
“I hear that from a lot of us soldiers about coming home. But you’re doing okay?”
“Getting there. It’s a process and I’m not going to lie, there are days that try to break me,” said Katie.
“I bet Chad helps.”
Katie couldn’t help but smile. “Definitely.”
“What a cutie, and a firefighter too. Good for you, girl.”
They laughed.
“So tell me all about heading the cold-case unit. That’s amazing, Katie. But knowing you, they’re lucky to have you working those cases.”
“I wouldn’t be able to do it without a great partner.”
“And he’s quite a looker too!” Lizzy laughed.
“What about you?” asked Katie. “Anyone special?”
“Yes, but long-distance relationships don’t really work. We’ll see what happens…”
“I thought you’d be in some exotic place by now. You’ve decided to go into intelligence?”
“I’ve been in training for a while. I was offered a job that will eventually take me to DC, but for now I’m going to be working in Monterey here in California. It’s beautiful, by the coast.”
“You better come visit again,” said Katie.
“Same for you! When you get tired of all the fabulous mountains and forest, come to the beach.”
“Deal.”
Cisco barked, and took off towards the smoking barbecue on the deck just outside the kitchen.
Katie laughed. “I guess he wants his steak.”
The women went back inside to the party. Katie introduced Lizzy to John and the two hit it off. Everyone was having a great time.
Katie had been exhausted when she arrived home, but now, surrounded by all her friends and family, it gave her a boost of energy and a much needed recess from the homicide cases. For a few hours, she didn’t give a thought to the little girls, the spooky old house, or the strange town.
After almost everyone had left Katie’s house, the two couples, Katie and Chad, McGaven and Denise, sat in the living room with Lizzy.
Cisco had used up all his energy and was sleeping peacefully on the floor.
“The look on your face was absolutely priceless,” said McGaven to Katie.
