And I’m as hard as the stone I’m leaning against.

When my eyes lock with hers, she releases a ragged breath.

“Holy fuck,” she breathes, tentatively moving toward me.

I’ll take that as a compliment.

Stopping only inches away, she puts down her phone, then tiptoes her fingers up my tie before lifting my collar. Holding the tie’s knot, she frees the tail, slides it from my neck and drops it on the counter.

I swallow, wondering where she’s going with this. “Undressing me already?” I half joke.

“Just a little.” She undoes my top two buttons, folds the collar down and tucks it inside my lapels. Taking a step back, she examines her handiwork.

“Not too casual?” I ask.

Her eyes sparkle. “It’s perfect. It’syou.”

She’s right. This feels so much better, freer, like I can relax into my own skin again. How does she know these little things about me already?

“I don’t think there’ll be a single woman left alive after tonight.”

“Why’s that?”

“With you looking like this, I’ll have to fight to the death to keep them away from you.”

I grin at her like a total fool. “Do you have any idea how much I want to kiss you right now?”

She moves in just close enough to brush against my chest. And my erection. “I think so.”

“You little tease.”

Her gaze dips to my throat as her finger traces my collarbone, sliding lower until it bumps into a button. “Well, I wouldn’t want you to ruin my makeup, but a careful, gentle kiss won’t hurt.”

I want nothing more, but I hesitate.

Her curious, worried eyes meet mine.

“I’m waiting for that damn phone to interrupt us.”

She smiles. “I’ve turned it off. And it’s staying off. All night.”

Well,fuck.

“That’s some message.” I grab her waist and pull her hard against my arousal, bending my head to meet her upturned face.

She rises on her toes, our mouths almost touching. “I believe you gave me a guarantee this morning. I wouldn’t want anything ruining that.”

Touching my lips to hers, I kiss her. Gentle and careful, the way she suggested. While I fight the urge to bend her over the countertop and take her right now, I marvel again at this sudden boldness she’s only revealed today.

“Do we really have to go to this dinner?” I whisper as I pull back a little.

“Unfortunately. But … we need to keep it professional. Although there’s no law that prevents lawyers getting involved with their clients, my firm definitely frowns upon it. It won’t look good for me if they know we’re living together, that there’s something … happening between us.”

I run my fingers up her spine, watching her eyelids lower with pleasure as her long hair flows like silk over the back of my hand. “There’s something happening between us?” I tease.

She jerks out of my arms, her fist clutching at her chest. “Oh, dear. It seems I’ve made a terrible mistake.”

“Get back here, woman,” I demand and pull her right up against me where she belongs. While those cheeky eyes smile up at me, I splay my hand over the cool, naked skin between her shoulder blades. “I’d never do anything to risk your career.”
