“You know, it’s easier to see where to get the water with a light on,” Fox said as he flicked a switch. Bright fluorescents assaulted my eyes.

“Shut up.” I glared over my shoulder at him.”

“You seemed awfully thirsty just a few minutes ago.” His grin was teasing, and his eyes were lit with amusement.

“Ha ha. Very funny.” I slid from the chair, crossing the kitchen and grabbing a glass before filling it with the filtered water from the refrigerator. “I was just going for a walk, and then… then I heard music. I thought it couldn’t possibly be grumpy ass Lucas listening to Atreyu.”

“And then you were caught red-handed checking out Lucas’s grumpy ass. You have a thing for him now?”

What?” I took a sip of water, trying to extinguish the mortification. “No… I just. It’s been a while,” I admitted with a shrug, placing my glass down on the counter.

“I thought that guy who left you high and dry at the wreck was your boyfriend.”

“Frankie?” I shook my head. “We’ve been friends forever. We would hook up sometimes, but it was agreed that we never wanted a serious relationship with each other.”

“In that case, I’m sure Lucas wouldn’t mind a hookup. He needs to get out some of that tension too.” Fox winked at me. Actually winked! Like he had just solved our problems.

“Absolutely not.”

“Why? It would put the both of you in a better mood.”

“He’s a grouch. Not my type.”But maybe it could be.

“Not your type? Did it change from a few minutes ago when you were being a peeping Tom?”

My mouth dropped open. “I am not a peeping Tom!” Fox raised his eyebrows at me and gave me a knowing look. “Okay, I was. But to be fair, what red-blooded woman wouldn’t stare at that.” I pointed in the direction of the gym.

“Believe me, women throw themselves at him.”

“I bet.” I clinked my fingernails against my glass in thought.

“I’m going to head out for the night. I was just doing my last rounds before going home.”

“I thought you lived here, too.” I frowned.

“Might as well. But I like my own home away from the grouch. Need anything before I head out?”

“No, I’m good.”

“Goodnight, Roe.”

“Goodnight, Fox.”

He left without another word.

The walk I had intended to cool my sexy thoughts just made the throbbing ache even worse. Images of Lucas all sweaty and angry flashed through my mind again. Ugh. I was never going to get to sleep tonight.

Chapter Twelve

Monroe

The feeling of someone near woke me from my sleep. Blinking my eyes open, Lucas sat at the end of the bed. He was quiet as he looked at his phone, typing away, dressed and ready for the day. And I… I was still in my jammies.

I sat up slowly, the blanket falling to my waist. “What are you doing in here?”

“We’re going to the museum today,” he replied without even glancing at me. “Get up and get ready. Breakfast is on the table.”

“You’re bossy.”
