“You have no fucking clue who and what I am. I don’t stick my dick anywhere, but maybe that’s an issue you’re having. You don’t get to stick your dick anywhere. I’m a trained, degreed pilot who’s been flying for more than ten years.”
“Why are you firing me?” asked Ulani, staring at the man.
“This!” he yelled, sweeping his arm around the room. “Did you not think I’d know that you brought the cavalry, the Marines, the SEALs, hell, the whole fucking military to back you on an investigation that’s top secret!”
“Ezra, it might be top secret, but it’s my pilots that are being targeted. I get to choose who I want on my base helping me. Now, you can either accept the help these men have offered, and your own team member, or I can call the POTUS and Admiral Crest and force you to allow these men and women to be here.
“You know that these men all served, extensively, most in Special Forces. Hell, Dunvegan was the entire Special Forces community,” he grinned. Ethan just chuckled, nodding his appreciation at the man. “They know what they’re doing, Ezra.”
“And I don’t?”
“That’s not what he said,” said HG. “You’ve got a small team, limited resources, and you’ve made very little headway on this case. Give us a week, and we’ll have it solved.”
He stared at the room of people and then at Ulani. She could tell he was thinking about his termination notice to her.
“Fine. I’ll accept the help, but you’re still in danger of losing your job.” Wyatt knew how much her work meant to her. She looked at him, then at her father and Ethan. Standing, she walked toward Wyatt.
“Did you mean it?” she whispered. “Did you mean what you said about us together from now on?”
“Every damn word, baby.” She kissed him and nodded, then turned to Ezra.
“I’ll finish this case, sir. Then you’ll get my resignation.”
He seemed shocked and disappointed that his blowhard attitude didn’t bother her more. He was used to people cowering at his voice and presence. Maybe his ex-wife was right. Maybe he was a bully.
“Don’t do anything foolish, Dunvegan. Think about it for a while.” Ulani said nothing, just watching as Ezra Barber took a seat and pushed a folder toward them.
“What’s this?” asked Wyatt.
“Death report on your roommate. The pulmonary valve literally exploded. Coroner said he’d never seen anything like it before. Whatever he was given forced the heart to work ten times harder than it was used to. He also found scratches on his thighs and abdomen. I think once he figured out what she was doing, he was fighting her off, and she was fighting him.”
“What about the blood in the car? Any hits on that yet?” asked Wyatt. He stared at him and then shook his head.
“No. Nothing yet, but we do know it was definitely a female.”
“Was there any doubt?” asked Rush. He shrugged his shoulders, looking around at the other men.
“You never know. He could have been hiding something.”
“He wasn’t hiding anything,” said Wyatt. “He liked women. A lot of women, which is what got him where he is.”
“Speaking of,” said Ezra, “did he have any family? Parents?”
“We’ve contacted them,” said Asa. “His folks are from Duluth, Minnesota. He’s got one brother who works for the city of Duluth. They’ll be here to claim the body in a few days. We thought it best to give you the time you needed.”
“I appreciate that,” said Ezra, “but they can come any time, or we can transport the body to them.”
They all nodded, then looked at Wyatt and Ulani.
“Well, what now?” asked Moose. Wyatt looked at Ulani and nodded, telling her that she was in control of this.
“We have to find those women, and one of you has to play the hot pilot.”
CHAPTER NINE
“Hi, Mom,” smiled Ulani, staring at her mother’s beautiful face.
“Well, hello,” she smirked. “Do you have something to tell me?” Ulani laughed, shaking her head.
