Ulani Dunvegan was the only child of Koana and Ethan Dunvegan. Her mother was the niece of Noa Lim and Ani Lim Carter. In the strangest of circumstances, they discovered that Koana’s father wasn’t the man she believed. He was Forrest ‘Pork’ Milner, the man her mother fell in love with years beforehand.
It was all perfect for Koana. She was thrilled tonotbe related to the man she’d thought was her father. Pork was the perfect father for her and the start of a relationship she’d only dreamed of before.
When Ethan accompanied Koana’s uncle, Noa, to help save the family land and home, it didn’t take long for her to fall in love with one very special man.
Initially, Ethan believed he would never have children. He’d had injuries that left him with sexual dysfunction. Between the stellar surgeons at Belle Fleur and the magical body of Koana, the miracle of Ulani was born.
Her parents doted on her, without spoiling her. But Ulani, like her mother and father, was no shrinking violet. She was athletic, curious, fearless, and positively stunning.
Vowing she would never cut her hair, she quickly realized that wasn’t a reasonable vow when, at fifteen, her hair became tangled in her bicycle spokes. Keegan cut it at her waist, giving her some soft layers, and she realized how pretty she really could be. It was the first time she’d recognized her own sexuality.
Of course, it didn’t seem to matter to the one man she wanted to notice her. To him, she was just a kid who was in the way.
Going to school with all the other kids at Belle Fleur meant that you often felt as though they were brothers and sisters. She was okay with that and, as an only child, loved the feeling of having the experience of a huge family but returning home to your privacy and own room.
In spite of her popularity, beauty, and other virtues, Ulani wasn’t asked on dates very often. She believed it was due to the others from Belle Fleur who went to school with her.
The truth was, she wasn’t really interested in dating. She didn’t have the time or the desire. She wanted to get her degree, follow her passion, and then come home and work for the family.
Like all the kids at Belle Fleur, she was given the opportunity to work out and train with the active members. It was something she craved every day. Even when she was sick, she was sneaking out of the house to run or work out with the team.
“Honey, you don’t have to work out every day,” said Ethan. “You’ve had a fever and could be contagious.”
“Dad, I’ve had a fever because of a sinus infection. It’s not contagious, and I’ll be fine,” she smirked. “I want to do this. I need to.”
Rory and Max watched the young girl sparring with some of the others. Rory stared at her movements, turning to look at Max.
“Where the hell did she learn that?” he asked.
“I’m guessing from watching you,” smirked Max. “Maybe watching Trak or, hell, I don’t know, it could have been Piper or someone else.”
Rory stepped in, tapping the shoulder of Cowboy. He nodded, stepping out of the ring. Rory started slow, not wantingto hurt the girl. She was solid. Five-feet-seven, one hundred and forty pounds of lean muscle, and he felt it all.
She nailed him in the abdomen, and he expelled a huge groan of air. If she’d been a man, an older man, he would have taken her down.
“Relax, Ulani, this is just sparring,” he said, removing the mouthpiece.
“It’s sparring today, but it could be real tomorrow,” she said, wiping the sweat from her brow.
“Honey, what is it you hope to do when you go to school?” he asked, eyeing her carefully.
“Nothing special,” she said, shaking her head. “I just want to be able to defend myself. I’ve heard about some of the women here who had horrible experiences in college. I don’t want that to happen to me.”
“Sweetie,” said Max, “you could always choose to go to a school nearby. We’d be there for you, checking on you all the time. Plus, you know that you’ll have your tracker on all the time.”
“I know all of that. Really, I just want to be prepared for whatever might come. That’s all. Don’t you guys always tell us to be prepared for anything?”
“We do,” smirked Max, “but I don’t want you to kill Rory in your preparation.”
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to come at you so hard.”
“It’s alright, Ulani. You didn’t hurt me, honey,” said Rory.
She smiled at the two men, then turned, leaving them in the ring. As she walked away, Ethan walked up to them.
“She still hitting it hard?” he asked.
“Yeah, brother. Like she’s got something to prove, but I can’t figure out what the hell it is.”
