“Hi,” said U-Jin, taking a seat.

“Hey, what took you so long?” asked Ethan.

“Fucking traffic in San Diego. It’s one of the reasons I hate leaving the island. There’s always some big convention here.”

“Please tell me it’s not the comic convention,” said Kev.

“No. That’s earlier in the summer. I don’t know what this was or care. It just took me forever to get the nail to Evie. She had to land at the commercial airport. She’s on her way back, and they should have an answer for us tonight if there’s any DNA on the nail.”

“If it’s fake, would there be DNA?” asked Carter.

“Possibly,” said Kelsey. “The nail has to stick to my nail, so it could have pulled off keratin or cells. If she touched Mateo, it could have her fluids on it as well.” Wyatt nodded at the group.

“I guess we wait and see.”

“Story of our lives,” smiled HG. “Wait and see.”

CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Other than a morning run and workout, they treated Sunday as a lazy day. DNA was found on the fingernail, including bodily fluids from Mateo and an unknown female. They were continuing to run it through databases but found nothing yet.

“I guess we can add rape to the charges when we find these girls,” said Tobias. “If they’re all as young as we think, they might not even understand that what they did is rape. If this girl was underage, Mateo is going to feel like shit.”

“He’ll need therapy either way,” said Bree. “But none of this is making any sense yet. Kidnapping and drugging pilots, cops, what else? Did they do this with firefighters? EMTs? What about SEALs?”

“Oh, shit,” muttered Noa. “I didn’t think about that.”

“I guess we have some more investigating to do,” said Wyatt. “Ulani and I will visit the headquarters for Coronado Fire. U-Jin, Rush, and Moose take SDFD. Ethan? Will you and Dad take the SEAL team along with Carter and Noa?”

“Yep.”

“Maybe the others should be checking with the guys at Pendleton to see if any Marines had the same experiences. If this spreads across the city, we’re going to need more people.”

“Only one way to find out,” said Kev. “Let’s go. We’ll take the Coast Guard.” Abe and BJ nodded, following him, the others splitting up across the city. In spite of it being Sunday, first responders were always working.

Ulani and Wyatt talked to the fire chief on Coronado for nearly an hour. He was shocked by the events that occurred with the police and Navy pilots but hadn’t heard anything from his own teams.

“You have to remember, we’re a small community here. My guys are usually ex-Navy or Corps. They often choose firefighting or police as their second career.”

“I understand,” said Wyatt.

“Listen, before you waste your time, let me call my counterpart in San Diego,” he said to the pair.

“We’d appreciate that.” The man stepped out of his office and called the San Diego fire chief.

“What do you think?” whispered Ulani to Wyatt.

“I think you’re the most beautiful woman in the world,” he smirked. She laughed, shaking her head.

“That’s not what I mean but thank you.”

“I know what you meant. I don’t know what to think. It’s completely random and doesn’t seem to have any purpose.”

“Well, maybe we’ll get lucky,” she said, nodding toward the man walking back to them.

“You might be onto something. He had two men who had similar instances. He’s called them to meet him at headquarters. He said to come to the back door, and he’ll let you both in. He said there are already a couple of your guys there, but he’ll wait for you two. He’s a good man, been in the role a long time. Curly Hudson is his name.”

“Thank you,” said Ulani.
