“I’m not really sure what that means, but I guess so. The address is…”

“I know it.”

“Oh.”

He indicates and sets off, heading towards the motorway.

The car is silent, but not that awkward. I wonder what everyone is thinking about. I’m nervous about what Xander has done. What problem did he take care of? Has he had a word with Pete? Or worse? I vaguely know what he did to his own stepdad. It’s not a great leap to imagine what he might’ve done to mine.

Harvey unclips my seatbelt and I lie down with my head on his lap, holding my broken arm out of the way. He strokes my hair, but we still don’t speak. I don’t think anyone wants to break the silence and potentially make the unthinkable a reality.

I fall into a quiet doze on Harvey’s lap, comfortable and feeling safe on the outside, but my insides are in turmoil.

“He’ll be okay,” Harvey whispers to me eventually.

“Pete?” I murmur.

He snorts. “No, Xander.”

“Oh, fuck. Sorry, I’m half asleep. Yeah, I hope so. Aren’t you worried about what he’s done to Pete?”

“Are you?”

“Am I awful for saying I hope Xander hurt him?”

“No.”

“Not for Pete but for Xander.”

“Xander can take care of himself.”

“No, he can’t.”

“He can. He is stronger than he thinks, and he has you.”

I smile slowly. “He does.”

“He needs you.” He leans over and kisses me softly.

“I need him too. I need all of you. I can’t wait to reach Xander and bring him home.”

“Home,” Sebastian murmurs. “I like the sound of that, baby girl.”

My smile widens, I know everything is going to be okay. “Me too.”

ChapterForty-Nine

Harvey

I sit contemplatively stroking Faith’s hair as she sleeps. We are nearing the place where she used to live. I have been through almost every possible situation that will greet us when we get there. I just hope that Faith is ready for it. Whatever it is.

We see the Bentley outside a crappy terraced house, and I glance down at Faith. I brush her cheek with the back of my hand, and she stirs.

“Are we there?” she mumbles.

“Yes.”

Her eyes snap open and she sits up, looking around and grimacing when she spots the house.
