“Do you fancy me?” His schoolboy question throws me off my game slightly.

Not that I had much to begin with, what with being omeganapped and held against my will in a dingy house with mean alphas. “You’re cute. You know, for a felon.”

“Felon!” he lets out a loud guffaw. “Well, yeah, can’t argue with that. I must apologise about all of this. I’m so sorry, Rayne. I have been wandering around in a very dark tunnel for a very long time. You are the light at the end of that. Do you feel what I’m feeling?” His sudden demand startles me.

“What are you feeling?” I ask, licking my lips nervously.

He takes two giant strides and is in front of me, looking down at me from his considerable height, his eyes searching mine.

Reaching out, he strokes the back of my cheek with this hand. “This.”

A spark of electricity that is hard to deny, skitters across my skin, warming my blood so that my cheeks go hot.

“I feel it.”

He removes his hand with a slow nod. “It makes me want to protect you, cherish you, make you mine.”

I don’t say anything. I mean, what can I say?

Yes, is out of the question.

No, is a bit hasty.

Maybe?

He has a lot of grovelling to do first before I give him anything.

“I see,” he says. “I understand.”

He turns back to the window and stalks over grimly.

“First things first,” he states, his voice returning to business. “You are in danger here, Rayne. Mick has no intention of letting you go.”

“Well, I figured that,” I mutter, glad we’ve changed the subject to the more important one at hand.

“No, you don’t understand.”

“Then explain it to me.”

He sighs. “Mick is ambitious. He isn’t a prime alpha, he wishes he was, but the only way to emulate that is by being the leader of a loose pack. But it’s not enough for him. He wants more. He is going to use you to build a super-pack. A large group of loose alphas that will fall under his rule, as it were.”

“What?” I snap. “What do you mean?”

My warm blood is now running icy-cold. I don’t like the sound of this one bit.

“You are a prize, Rayne. A trophy even. This wasn’t about a scavenger hunt, so much as a plain old hunt. Bryan found your name a few weeks ago through an idiot prime alpha who still belongs in nappies. Got drunk and spilled the details on who you are, who your father is, that he took your virginity, the whole sordid tale.”

His tone has gone scathing, but I don’t think he’s getting at me.

“Andy,” I growl. “That little prick.” I clench my fist tightly. I’ll fucking kill him. Also, they know exactly who I am? “So you asking me my name, was what? A ploy to get me on your side?”

“No. Yes, I already knew who you were, yes, we set you up to get you on the side of the road on your own, but the second you entered the car, and your scent filled my senses, things changed.Ichanged. I wanted you to tell me your name because you wanted to.”

“How am I expected to believe you are a good guy when you went along with all of this?” I ask, wanting to yell at him and beat him with my tiny fists.

“You aren’t. I hope you can forgive me and learn to trust me, but I did you wrong, Rayne and I regret it. The dark tunnel is no excuse.”

Grimacing at him, I turn my back, but then quickly spin around again, needing to keep my gaze on him.
