He’s family.

With an inward sigh, I speak up. “I know a guy,” I murmur. “An old school buddy. We can go there.”

James gives me a grateful look and silently we dodge around the infighting alphas, hoping that not too many took off after the omega. I wish I knew her name. She is gorgeous and that scent…

I push it all aside as James leads me to an old clapped-out Ford Escort and shoves the alpha in the back.

He climbs into the driver’s seat and rips the wires out from underneath the dash.

Climbing into the passenger side, I ask with a snicker, “Youknow how to hot-wire a car?”

He gives me a grim look, tinged with amusement as he sparks the wires together and the car starts. “I wasn’t always the responsible arsehole you know and love,” he says and glances over his shoulder briefly, before turning back to face front and setting off at a reasonable pace so as not to draw attention to the car.

“Well, well, well. James St. Stevens, the rebel.”

He snorts. “Guess we are both exposing more of our hidden selves today.” I ignore his pointed look and stare innocently out of the window.

“Head towards home and I’ll direct you from there.”

“Thanks,” he mutters.

We don’t speak again until I tell him where to go.

ChapterFourteen

Rayne

It feels like my brain has given up and left the building. Or at least the part that can think and feel. Actions are coming easily enough. The trembling of my hands won’t quit, which is seriously annoying and is shaking my bag which is housed on my lap in front of my chest. The further we get away from the house, the more returns to me though.

Blinking, I turn my head to the side, then I reach out and grab Spencer by his shirt. “Richard. We have to go back for him.”

With a kind smile, he unpeels my hand gently from his shirt and places it on the seat between us, before he lets go. “James has got him. Don’t worry. He is your…mate?”

He can’t hide the curiosity behind his innocent tone. It draws me in. I shake my head.

“No. But he was trying to save me. Even though he didn’t stop them from abducting me in the first place.”

I see the spark of rage in Spencer’s forest green eyes and shy away from it, but it’s gone in a flash. “He did what?” he croaks out.

“Doesn’t matter,” I say with a sigh, rubbing my wrist where Richard bit me. “He redeemed himself. I feel terrible leaving him there.”

“It’s okay, I promise you. James and Cameron know how to take care of themselves, and each other.”

I nod slowly, not really believing him. There were so many nasty alphas at that house. The three of them are probably dead now because of me.

My shoulders slump and my back arches in mental defeat. The car swerves abruptly to the left, shunting me over the seat to crash into Spencer.

“Sorry,” I mutter and scoot back.

“Will,” Spencer snaps. “Be a bit gentler, please.”

“Tail,” the giant named Will replies.

I glance over my shoulder, but don’t see anyone. “Please don’t let them take me back there,” I cry out suddenly.

“We won’t,” Spencer says soothingly. “You are safe now.”

“I need to ring my parents,” I wail, the emotions that were absent earlier returning in full force.
