“No! There isn’t a single doctor in the country that would prescribe it to me again so soon. It’s restricted. Fuck!” I run a hand through my hair, only just remembering about the ice-cream that’s now melting and gloopy.

“Oh,” James says, understanding dawning on his Richard-looking features. “Oooooh.”

I make a ‘uh-huh’ gesture with my whole body, hands, head, the works, threatening to slop ice-cream all over the gorgeous wooden floor. I look for somewhere to place it down, but the carton is all drippy and wet and the closest piece of furniture to me is an antique-looking sideboard. So I continue to hold the drooping carton as all four alphas look at me in varying degrees of interest.

I’ve thrown them for a bit of a loop, it seems. Clearly, they have never met an omega who suppresses her heat before. Or not to their knowledge, at least. I find it curious, and a bit intriguing, but also, I feel like a bug under a microscope now.

“Ahem.” I clear my throat out of a lack of anything to say, but needing to say something.

It jumpstarts them into action and they flap about, throwing suggestions at me. Well, three of them do. William, the big biscuit man, locks his gaze onto mine and says over the din. “We’ll ring Jones and see if he can find them near your car.”

“Thank you,” I say relieved. “They’re in a black zip up pouch. There is only a few days’ worth. I was meant to be staying with my cousin and then heading back home. I can’t stay here indefinitely, so we are going to have to come up with a plan to remove those arseholes from the front of your property. I mean, come on. You live in one of the most exclusive neighbourhoods in the country. Surely the neighbourhood watch or whatever it is, will shift them on their way soon?”

“You would think,” James scoffs, “But unfortunately, they haven’t done anything other than pull up and stay in their cars.”

“Well, they did more than that,” I reply heatedly. “Can’t I ring the police and tell them?”

“That would give out your location and then your dad would find out, come for you and with them waiting outside, he would be jumped before he knew what was going on. As much as I hate to be the arsehole here, no, you can’t.”

I glower at him with open resentment. But a small part of me knows he’s right. I’m stuck here until we figure a way out.

“How about over the neighbour’s fence?” I put that out there.

“You mean the ten-foot-high solid brick wall that borders two multi-million-pound properties with more security than you can shake a stick at? You would be arrested for trespassing and then you would be fair game. We can’t protect you in jail.”

“Can’t you explain and ask them to allow me over?” I spit back. “They might be amenable if they knew what was going on.”

“You don’t know the neighbours,” he growls, and I shut up.

Lowering my gaze and my chin, to stare at my feet. I try not to cry.

“Rayne,” he says, in a much kinder voice. “Leave this with us. We have connections. We can sort this out. It’s just going to take time and therightway. We won’t keep you here any longer than we have to.”

“Unless you want to stay,” Cameron says, bouncing up and down on the couch like a buoyant puppy.

I can’t help but give him a smile. “Please ring your man and ask him to pick up my stuff from the pavement, if it’s still there. I’ll be upstairs, I guess.”

Turning to leave, I feel their eyes on me. I keep going, stopping by the kitchen to dispose of the wet carton. I slope up the stairs, feeling very despondent and not even having my phone to ring anyone to tell them I’m okay. I hope the alphas use all of their heavy political sway to make this right and soon because one thing is very clear to me. If this Jones guy doesn’t find my injections, there is no way I can be here when my heat inevitably hits.

Just no way in hell.

“We have to tell her,” I say as I loiter in the doorway of the TV room, watching her progress down the hallway to the kitchen, and then up the stairs.

“That would ruin the illusion that we’re actually the good guys,” James says with a sigh. “She is starting to trust us and if she knew we’d been after her all this time, what would that do?”

I sigh. For some strange reason, I seem calm and composed around her. Even with her in this house, the need for aggression is lessened. It is very weird. I’m not used to being so chilled.

“I know and believe me, I don’t want to build up any walls that have started to crumble. She’s been through hell today, and yet she is still standing. Somehow. I’ve never known anyone quite like her before.”

“You and me both.”

“Too bad she’s more interested in your twin than you.” Cam’s innocent jab came out with its fists flying towards James.

“Jesus,” he snaps. “Do you mind?”
