I grunt at the reminder of my gunshot graze. It’s still oozing blood, but I’m not going back to the doctor who ratted me out to Halstead. Although, I see why he did, it doesn’t change that my trust issues have trust issues and that didn’t help.
“Deal, but James gave away my bedroom.”
She snickers. “I’d offer for you to share mine, but that will lead to nookie, and I really need to build a nest when I get back.”
“I’m sure James will find somewhere for me,” I murmur, wondering if the couch is comfy. I could sleep for a week. It took everything I had to get up and walk out of Rayne’s bed, myold bed earlier.
We spend the rest of the short drive in silence, but a peaceful one, and I know that despite the hell I’ve lived for years, I finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. I hope James and I can come to an agreement about the pack and that things work out with Rayne the way I hope they will.
One thing I know for certain is she’s right. Until Mick is behind bars, I cannot show my face on the streets. I won’t put Rayne through the agony of losing me, when I know she feels the same as I do. We are tiptoeing around it at the moment, but I know. I can feel it vibrating between us as we sit here in silence. She is my mate. I am hers. We belong together and nothing will come in the way of that.
ChapterThirty-Seven
Rayne
When we pull up to the house, I pause, chewing my lip. “Do you think it’s safe to get out?”
Richard opens the door and climbs out, slamming it shut in the process. He makes his way around to my side and opens the door. “Come on. Let’s get you inside.”
I take his hand and grabbing my bag, I let him pull me up out of the car. I close the door and lock it, before we hurry up the front steps to the door. Jones opens it and we pile in, with the rest of the alphas right behind us.
“I’m leaving now, unless you need anything?” Jones says to James.
“No, we’re good. Thanks, pal. You’ve gone above and beyond. Go back to your family and say hi to Marie for us.”
“Will do,” he says and waves before he disappears.
Spencer closes the door and locks it, also sliding the bolt across and putting the chain on.
“Is that all necessary?” I murmur as the pack take in Richard, hovering uncertainly near the side table where the keys are kept.
“Rather safe than sorry,” James mutters. “Rich. Are you back or just here to cause more shit?”
“Back,” he replies. “If you’ll have me.”
I beam and snuggle into him, not being able to resist touching him. He cuddles me back with a smile down at me, his poor battered face bruised and cut. “I want him here,” I state just in case anyone wasn’t aware of my feelings about this.
“We want you both,” James says. “But, Rich. Rayne has your room, so you’ll have to bunk with me until we figure something else out.”
“Oh,” I murmur, my cheeks going warm. “Sorry, I can sleep on the couch.”
“Absolutely not,” Spencer insists, giving Richard the stink-eye for some reason.
“No,” Richard agrees. “You keep it. I will fit in wherever.”
Feeling a bit bad that I’ve taken his bed away from him, I pull away and murmur, “I need to go and shower and change. It’s hot out there.”
“We’ll find you later when there’s food,” Cameron says.
I nod and make for the stairs quickly, kicking off my shoes and scooping them up before I head up.
“Thank you,” Richard says before I hit the first one. “For what you did. It should be me looking out for you. You are amazing and brave and all the things that make mefeelsomething. Sorry, I’m not very good at this.”
I turn to see he is looking down, almost embarrassed by his words. “That was perfect.”
He looks up and grins.
I return it and continue on my way, making sure to give a sexy sway to my hips as I can feel all of their eyes on my arse.
