“Jay,” he starts, but I shush him.
“Go to Rayne. She needs you next to her, not down here arguing with me.” I turn from him and head into my office, shutting the door quietly to block out everyone’s emotions that are running higher than normal. The rut is still nagging at me, but it doesn’t seem to be as strong as a normal one. It must be because Rayne isn’t in her heat. It’s a bit confusing. I probably have been with omegas on suppressants before, but I just never knew it. They never said and I didn’t ask. Does that make me a selfish cunt? Probably, but the interest just wasn’t there. With Rayne it is different. I need her like I need to breathe. Being with her last night, knotting inside her, feeling her slick on my cock was the best feeling I’ve ever had. It was a high that I’ve never experienced before and will never be surpassed. The urge to mate with her is clawing at me, but until she is ready, all of us have to keep our teeth to ourselves. I will not pressure her or have any of the others even inquiring about it with her. We know she is with us; she chose us. That means everything right now. The rest will come.
A soft knock makes me move away from the door and call out, “Yeah?”
“You okay?” Spencer asks, opening the door and poking his head around. “You made Richard cry.”
I snicker. “I doubt that.”
“Okay, no, you didn’t, but he’s pissed.”
“Tough shit. He deserved it.”
“Not with you. Himself.”
“Oh.” Yeah, now I feel bad. He is so hard on himself, which is something I’ve come to learn since we went at each other not that long ago.
“How do you think this happened?” he asks, his innocent tone belying his curiosity.
“They are connected in ways we cannot fathom right now. Remember that he was her saviour. That is how she sees him. She fell for him first. He is supposed to be the prime alpha of this pack. I don’t know, Spence. It all must add up somehow.”
“Is he going to take over now he’s back?”
I sigh. “I don’t know. We haven’t had a chance to discuss it.”
“Do you want him to?”
“Not if he doesn’t want it. If he does, I will step down. It’s rightfully his, but if he has any doubts, then it’s best if he doesn’t. I hope he gets that.”
“I think he probably does. He seems different. More subdued, more serious, which is saying something.”
“Yeah. Guess we should get back to it.”
He nods. “Cam has taken over the back. The patio is enclosed, so it will probably be okay, but just in case.”
He hovers and hesitates over his next words.
“What?” I ask, eyes narrowed.
“Youare her prime alpha, not him. He gave up that right. He doesn’t get to waltz back in here and claim top dog.”
I raise an eyebrow at my younger brother. “Something else bugging you there, Spence?”
His expression turns shifty. “Actually, yeah. If you drop me for him, I’ll kick your arse from here to next week!” he exclaims hotly.
“Drop you? What the fuck are you talking about?” I’m bewildered about where this has come from.
“You know exactly what I mean,’ he says bitterly. “Little Spenny, the third wheel to the older twins.”
His whiny voice makes me snicker. “Fuck off, you utter bellend. You’re not a third wheel. Never were, you just couldn’t keep up.”
I’ve riled him up good and proper and it’s hilarious. He goes apoplectic and puce in the face. “Fuck. You,” he spits out and emphasises that with a stuck up middle finger.
“Put that away before I shove it up your arse and make you swivel on it,” I choke out, laughing so hard, my guts are aching.
“Grrr,” he growls and launches himself at me, flattening me underneath him. “Tell me you won’t drop me!” he snarls.
I stare into his eyes, so full of fear that it sobers me up instantly. “I won’t drop you, Spence. You’ve been here for me through everything. But his place is also here.”
