“Okay.” He stands up and leaves without another word.

I yawn, feeling sleepy and sore and pissed off that I’m not downstairs helping strengthen the stronghold. But I know if I get up and go downstairs, William will just pick me up and carry me straight back here. I might as well save myself the indignity of being hauled around like a sack of spuds and stay here like a good little omega.

Replacing my phone against the wall where I found it earlier, I curl up in my deliciously scented nest and close my eyes.

“Rayne?”

Cameron’s voice makes me open my eyes and turn over to peer out of the wardrobe. “Hi. Everything okay?”

“That’s what I’m supposed to be asking you,” he says with a smile.

“I’m good.”

He comes closer and sits down. “Can I ask you something?”

“Always.” I take his hand and lace our fingers together. Out of all of them, I feel a kinship with the preppy puppy. He is closest to my age, so much younger than the other four and we think the same. We love a laugh and will go to any lengths to do so. Also, he appreciates a good fart comparison as much as I do.

He stares at our hands for a moment before lifting them to his mouth. He licks the back of my hand, tasting my skin before he kisses it softly and lowers it again. “What do you want for your birthday?”

His question comes out of the blue, surprising me. “Oh,” I say, blinking. “Uhm, I hadn’t really thought about it. You don’t have to get me anything.”

“It’s your twenty-first!” he exclaims. “You must want something.”

I shrug, feeling an overwhelming sadness suddenly drop over me.

“My parents were going to surprise me. I’m sure it was going to be extravagant and distracting.”

He narrows his eyes. “You don’t sound happy about it.”

“I guess I always imagined having my twenty-first and then going into my last year of Uni. That never happened.”

“How come?”

“I took a gap year, and that turned into three,” I say, not really wanting to go into the reasonswhymy gap year became so long.

“You could always go back. What were you going to study?”

“Law, like my dad,” I say, the smile forming as I think about it, despite the sadness that is still draped over me.

“Ah, yes, that makes sense, and I can see you being all lawful and in a sexy suit.”

I snicker, cheering up. “Maybe one day. I have my immediate future in front of me, and it doesn’t involve going to university.”

“Why not?” The seriousness of his questions drives my curiosity.

“I’m here now,” I say carefully. “I want to be a good omega to the pack.”

“So you think going to university makes you abadomega?” he asks, confused.

“Well, no, but I want to be here for you…uhm…”

“We just want you to be happy, Rayne. Take it from someone who didn’t get into university. If you have the opportunity and it’s somethingyouwant to do, then you should do it.”

“But what about the pack?”

“What about us? We will come and visit you on campus and make sure that any university boys that are sniffing around you, know who you belong to.”

I snicker. “Oh, I can see that, and it’s not a pretty picture!”
