“My only job is to keep you safe. Do you trust me?”

I nod immediately. “Of course.” I lift my dress and drop to my knees, crawling under the desk that faces the door. I remove my shoes and pull my knees up, making sure my dress isn’t peeking out from underneath the small gap at the bottom of the desk back.

“Do not move. The men in here are dangerous…”

“Don’t leave me!” I plead with him, the reality of this situation suddenly crashing down on me now that I’m squashed under a desk in a dingy office with thin blue carpet tiles that smell of damp and sweaty feet.

“I’ll be back for you.” That’s all he says as he pushes the chair in front of me.

I barely breathe when he opens the door. There’s a weird spritz sound, and then I hear him mutter, “Four, five, two, one, six. Need ass…” The door closes, leaving me wondering whose ass he needs.

My mouth goes dry when I think of Cain outside with that madman. I didn’t see much of him, or his accomplices, only that he was wearing a balaclava that obscured his face, and a black hoodie and combat pants. I close my eyes and try to remember something else, anything else, in order to push the fear aside.

The door suddenly crashes against the wall.

My eyes fly open.

Holding my breath, I resist the urge to call for Nico.

“Where the fuck is she?” A man’s voice growls. “That fucking cunt!”

I hear a noise that sounds like someone kicking the thin wall. “I’m going to kill her. No one double-crosses me and gets away with it.”

Tears of terror prick my eyes when it goes silent. I try to scrunch myself up even more under the desk.

“We should’ve told her the whole plan, man,” another one drawls. “She probably got spooked when we came in.”

“No, that thieving whore took the contents of that box and ran.” He pauses to inhale deeply, and I cringe. He must be able to smell me.

“What the fuck is that smell?” he asks.

My cheeks go hot. I hope he isn’t talking about me with such disgust. It’s only then that I smell it too, or I think I do. It’s that damp horrible sweaty feet smell but ten times worse than before.

I try not to gag on it, burying my face in my knees and breathing through my mouth through the fabric of the dress.

“Find that bitch and bring her to me. No matter what it takes.” The first alpha growls, and then it all goes quiet as the door slams shut.

I daren’t move. What if that’s a trick, and they are still in here trying to lure me out of hiding? Not that it’s difficult or anything. All they have to do is use their brains to find me if they think someone is in here. It’s not the best place, but there again, it was theonlyplace to hide.

Time ticks on.

I don’t hear anything else except a bang loud enough to be heard all the way back in this office.

After an inordinate amount of time, I have to conclude that they actually did leave. I relax slightly but stay where I am, waiting for Nico to come back for me. He said he would. I wait for the sound of the sirens, but they don’t come. I could be in here for hours. Or less if the robbers send someone to search under all the desks.

Wishing I’d listened to Cain and just gone straight to the party, I pull my phone out and try to message my dad.

No signal.

Great.

But it suddenly strikes me that I will be missed. Wanda will know I’m not there and will ring my mum. Won’t she? Although it doesn’t really matter because it’s not like my parents can get to me stuck in here anyway.

This is a disaster.

And to top it all off, I’m starting to feel all sweaty and nesty again.

When the door opens again, I freeze, breathing in shallow breaths to try to remain silent.
