“You,” I hiss to my companion.

I’m interested to see what she will do, but without batting an eye, she opens her bag and pulls out her ID, handing it over.

“Very well, Mr Harris and Miss Quinn, these are the details…”

Karen drones on while I give ‘Miss Quinn’ the stink-eye. As soon as we are out of here, I need to get to the bottom of why she is here pretending to be Sophia.

Karen shoves the lengthy NDA in front of me and hands me a pen. I don’t bother to read it through; I just sign and date it, looming over Sophia, for lack of another name to call her, while she does the same. I hope this doesn’t come back to bite the real Sophia in the arse at some point.

Once she is done, with Karen’s warning ringing in our ears, I grasp Sophia’s hand and pull her quickly towards the door. Nico left ages ago, while we’ve been pratting about with this shite.

Frowning, it occurs to me that Nicoleftwithout any hassle. Just stood up and walked over to the door, opened it and…left with Sophia.

How?

To my annoyance, I see that the van isn’t parked where I left it. Thanks to the Taskforce that burst into the bank not that long ago, it has been moved along several hundred feet up the road.

Finding Luca in the driver’s seat, I slide open the back door and shove Sophia inside before climbing in behind her and shutting the door.

“Where is Franco?” I bark.

“Gone round the back. What the fuck is going on? We tried to get inside, but they wouldn’t let us.”

“I wish I knew. Nico is heading back home with…our asset…”

Luca slides his dark eyes over to Sophia and gives her a thorough once-over. She shifts uncomfortably in her seat.

“I see,” Luca says eventually. He fires up the engine and skids away from the curb, around to the back of the bank, where we meet up with Franco.

I’ve got a terrible feeling about all of this in the pit of my stomach. Sugar, I’m just going to have to call her that from here on out, so I don’t get confused, is in danger. I know it. Whoever those men were earlier, both the guys who threw over the bankandthe Taskforce that turned up, are a threat to her, and I’m here babysitting some fraud while I should be protecting Sugar from all harm. Nico set it so we split up. I just need to figure out why, and what Sophia has got to do with us and whoever that Atlas guy is she thinks I am.

I glare at her.

She is staring at me, chewing her lip. “You’re not Atlas, are you?” she asks, her accent so like Sugar’s it’s scary. Where did they get this woman from?

“No,” I state. “My name is Cain Harris, and you are going to tell meeverythingthat is going on here, or I’m going to make life very uncomfortable for you very quickly.”

She gulps.

Luca swears loudly and swerves up onto the curb. “Cain,” he says, his tone urgent. “You need to check this out.”

I glance through the front windscreen, taking in the scene on the side of the road. A smashed-up van, a bleeding body and tyre marks burned into the road.

“Fuck.” I shove Sophia aside to climb out of the van. “Sugar?” I yell. “Sugar?”

ChapterSeventeen

Sugar

Uncle Lorenzo is regarding me as closely as I am him. I remember suddenly that my head is bleeding and put a hand to it, dabbing my fingertips against the wound. It’s sticky and warm, but doesn’t seem to be pouring out, which is good. I lost my cloth in the struggle.

The van veers, and we pull over, coming to a stop. The door opens, letting in a gust of fresh air, which I inhale deeply before a man climbs in, an alpha dressed like he belongs in a TV show about the police force. The van wobbles, and he slams the door shut.

“Enzo,” he says before his eyes catch mine.

Blue eyes that I’ve seen in two different faces today already.

I groan. “Seriously?”
