What do I do?

ChapterThirty

Cain

Ilook up from my place on the floor in my bedroom when there is a knock at the door. Hoisting myself to my feet and grabbing the towel to wipe the sweat off my brow from the exercise, I open it and say, “Finally.”

Quinn smirks at me. “Not here to kick your arse, you fucking prick. Need you to roll out. Nico found Sugar.”

I nod and pull my black tee back on. There’s no time to shower and change. I’ll just have to do this all hot and sweaty. “What’s the plan?”

“Well, you, Atlas, Franco and Luca are going to get her. Fail, and we’ll speed up the waiting and get your death over with. Cesca doesn’t have Sugar’s location yet, so this is hush-hush. Clear?”

“Yep.” I follow him down the corridor. “Wait. Why is Atlas tagging along?”

“He’s an asset.”

Quinn’s reply is short and leaves zero room for argument.

I will get more out of a stone wall than our prime alpha, so I let it go and follow him down the corridor to where Atlas is already waiting with Franco and Luca. It pisses me off that I’m the last to arrive.

“What kept you?” Atlas drawls.

“Fuck you.”

There just isn’t another response I can come up with. Maybe at 3AM tomorrow morning, but now? Yeah, not happening.

“Play nice and get my girl back,” Quinn says with a warning in his tone, turning back to glare at me. “Nico will send you the address.”

“No, Nico is going with them,” Nico says.

I turn around to see him dressed much like me in a black tee and combat pants. Apart from the slight favouring of his left side, you’d never know he’d been shot.

“Are you fuck,” Quinn barks. “Get back in bed.”

“You are not pretty enough to make that demand,” Nico retorts with a smirk. “I’m going for Sophia, and you can’t stop me.”

“If she gets hurt because of your injury…”

“Then I will kill myself before you reach me.”

“Damn straight.”

They glower at each other as the rest of us roll out of the front door of the compound and head for the black van idling in the driveway.

“You’re in love with her, aren’t you?”

Quinn’s simple question makes my blood run cold. I turn back, but I see he isn’t talking to me. He’s talking to Nico. I should leave them alone and get in the van, but that isn’t happening. I’m immobile as I wait for the answer and the outcome.

“What does it matter?” Nico asks steadily.

“If I know you’re in love with her, I know you’ll do everything along with lay down your own life to save her.”

“I’d do it anyway. It’s my job.”

“Nah,” Quinn says with a sniff, looking sideways for a moment. “It’s not the same.”

The tension rackets up a notch. No one dares move or even breathe.
