I tilt my head. I don’t think he is talking about Sophia and me in the sense of us together, so he doesn’t know about our interactions at Enzo’s.

“She has been through an ordeal. I’m not sure now is the right time to set you two up. I had high hopes, but I don’t think I can make her go through with it just yet. I understand if that disappoints you and you feel you need to move on.”

“No, I’m not going anywhere,” I say slowly, not wanting to seem too eager. That would probably make him suspicious. But there isn’t a chance in hell I’m walking away from Sophia now after tasting her. She is my mate. I know it, and she knows it. “Is she okay?”

“Okay, good. Good. I’m not really sure. I haven’t…”

“Carter?”

I look over as Quinn turns his head as well. I smile when I see Sophia sticking her head out of the window quite a few metres away.

She grins when I catch her eye, and she waves.

“She seems fine to me,” I murmur when she climbs out of the window, followed closely by an enormous alpha who seems intent on keeping her in the room.

“I know him,” she exclaims to the alpha doing his best to coax her back inside.

She runs up to me, breathless, her cheeks a cute pink, her green eyes sparkling and full of happiness.

“Sophia,” I murmur. “You are well?”

Her expression turns confused, but when I shake my head imperceptibly, she clicks that I don’t want anyone to know I was at Enzo’s with her.

“Yes, I’m fine. Are you well?”

“Very much so.”

We exchange a smile. Her eyes flick to her father’s and then back to me. “Can we talk?”

I give Quinn the courtesy of asking his permission. “May I?”

“Yes, of course, of course,” he blusters, seemingly confused by her behaviour.

Apparently, she hasn’t told anyone anything about her time away from home.

Interesting.

“Sophia,” the other alpha murmurs.

“Nico, it’s fine. Daddy introduced us the other day.”

Nico’s gaze lands on Quinn almost angrily.

Ah, I see it now.

I can also smell it. It’s very faint as if she has showered, but the underlying scent of Nico coats her skin.

She holds out her hand for me to take, which I do without hesitation and allow her to lead me back into the house via the back door this time.

I hear Quinn growl to Nico to leave us alone. He does, but he is not happy about it in the slightest.

Sophia takes me down the hallway and into the sitting room where I met her a few days ago.

“Hi,” she says shyly, letting go of my hand and curling her loose hair behind her ear.

“Hi,” I reply with a soft smirk that makes her pant slightly.

“I’m glad you managed to escape the raid,” she whispers. “I was worried.”
