I glare at the closed door, wishing we could have that conversation now, when it bursts open, and Eli walks out carrying a bin with the omega behind him. Her eyes are lowered, and she looks like she’s been hit by a ten-ton truck. I feel for her, even though I wish I didn’t.

I just can’t get that scent out of my airways. It’s lingering, making my mouth water at the thought of it consuming my senses day and night…

Fuck. I need to get her out of my head.

Eli disappears into the gent's toilets and returns shortly after, taking her arm and leading her to the door. He catches my eye and mutters something to her. She nods and waits as he comes over to Nik’s desk. Nik looks up, giving the omega a quick once-over, but dismisses her. He can’t pick up her scent from here. He doesn’t know how affecting it is.

“I’m taking Ms Happs home. She’s in the clear for now. Nik, I want that report to be spot on when I get back.”

Nik nods. “All i’s dotted, and all t’s crossed. We are not losing these dicks on a technicality."

“Good,” he mutters and then turns his attention to me, seeing as my eyes have wandered over to the omega.

“You going to tap it and unwrap it?” I snort when he punches me in the shoulder to get my attention.

“Excuse me?” he snarls as Nik looks up curiously.

“Her scent…like a Terry’s Chocolate Orange. It was a joke. Lighten up.”

“She’s mated,” he states in an icy tone that I’ve rarely heard from him before.

I draw my eyes to his. They are furious. I’m not sure if he’s angry with me, her or everyone.

“Yeah, unfortunately. Doesn’t mean we can’t look at those perky tits and peachy arse.” I’m pushing him. I’ve seen something in him that hasneverbeen there before with regard to an omega or pretty much anyone else before. I want to force it to the surface, make him admit he fancies her.

He does that and more. He slaps his hand to my chest and slams me up against the wall behind me, practically winding me with his superior prime alpha strength. “Don’t talk about her that way. She is mated. You will treat her with respect. Get your mind out of the fucking gutter and back on the job.”

He hisses and lets me go.

I exchange a triumphant glance with Nik, whose eyebrows have gone sky high. “Me thinks he protests too much.”

He stalks off, keeping his back to me as he gives me the finger.

I snort and look at the omega. She gazes up at Eli with big doe-eyes. A realisation hits me hard and unpleasantly. Eli has fallen for a mated omega, and now he will never accept anyone else into our pack.

We are doomed.

ChapterSeven

Elijah

Feeling Kal’seyes boring into my back, I give him the finger and ignore him. Marching up to the omega, who has unfortunately been caught up in this raid in a slight twist of fate on our shared birthday, I avoid looking into her eyes which are the same colour as mine. It’s something that I cannot do. I can’t stare into the forest green depths and drown in their loveliness. I can’t appreciate her full red lips, which I want to drive my tongue in between to taste her tongue on mine. I can’t inhale her scent and have it consume me. I can’t engage her in a conversation which I know will meet my every expectation and then some. I can’t fall for her and have my heart ripped out because she isn’t mine and belongs to someone else. Several someones, even if they are criminals. She is theirs.

“Let’s go,” I mutter.

She follows me out, not saying a word. Her anxiety is rolling off her in waves, which is affecting me in the strangest way. I feel anxious on her behalf, which is annoying as fuck. I don’t have time tofeelfor her. I need to get her back to the house, which hasn’t been frozen in the asset claiming because the crafty fucks put it in her name. There’s nothing we can do about that, but at least she has a place to go tonight, and I don’t have to drop her off on the side of the road.

I open up the back door of the black SUV, and she whimpers. I glare at her as she just stands there. But then it hits me right in the guts, almost taking my breath away.

She has picked up her alpha’s scent from earlier.

I pause, hovering, wavering as I just have no idea what to do. She is so vulnerable that I want to take her in my arms and comfort her, but that is never going to happen. I don’t steal other alpha’s mates. No matter how I feel about Morgan Happs, sheisa Happs. She is not mine, and she never will be. I need to push all of these crazy thoughts aside, drop her off, and forget about her.

“Sorry,” she mumbles as we stand there.

“It’s okay,” I mutter, wishing I had someone else to drive her home, but they are all busy processing the enormous drug ring we took down tonight. I still can’t believe it happened. All these years of working towards this coup, and it happened so easily.

But not so easily for Morgan.
