I rise and take a minute to breathe as I head back into the kitchen. She will be all right now. I’m neither bitter nor jealous that they are the ones she needs. I know who I am, and while I can’t see her through this physically, she knows I’m there for her in every other way. It just brings home that I need to move up the timeline for the small wedding I’m planning meticulously. I want to be tied to her in that way, not having the biological mating with her. I want it sooner rather than later now. I love her more than anything, and I want the whole world to know how much.

I return with the ice to see the alphas surrounding her, close to her but not touching her.

Now, all we can do is wait.

ChapterForty-Nine

Morgan

“How do you feel?”

I look up from where I’m curled up in my nest reading, several days after my mating bond broke painfully and horribly with Adam. Amy warned me, and after she’d already given Kaleb the number of her doctor friend, I made sure to check in with her about it. I’m glad I did, or Dylan probably would’ve driven me to the emergency room, where I’d have undergone a humiliating experience. I was much better off dealing with this in my home surrounded by my men, Dylan included.

“Good,” I say, smiling at Elijah and closing the book. It’s nearing sunset, and he is lingering in the doorway with a single red rose. “For me?”

“Well, not for me,” he replies, his face serious. More serious than usual, but I know why.

“I’m sorry I didn’t mention it. I really didn’t think it would be so bad. When the other one broke, it was a relief, like a restraint that was stopping me from breathing snapped. I didn’t expect this to be as bad, even though Amy warned me.”

“I don't expect you to apologise, but I do expect you to tell us stuff. We want to know so we can help you. I know you are probably used to dealing with these types of things on your own, and that’s fine. But if we’d known about this, we could’ve properly taken care of you.”

“I know.”

He nods, and I know that it’s over.

He places the rose on the chest of drawers and enters the room slowly. “You are getting close.”

I give him a quizzical stare. “Oh?”

“Your scent is more potent.”

“It’s a bit early.”

“My nose doesn’t lie.”

I laugh quietly. “No, it doesn’t. Your scent is more enticing to me too.”

“Your preheat will be soon, in the next day or so?”

He asks me which is so cute. “Perhaps.” I’m being annoyingly coy, but I don’t want to get his hopes up. Plus, he has tortured me for weeks; now it’s my turn. You know, sort of. Just for funsies.

He is probably right, though. I feel fine, but as soon as he stepped into the room, his scent hit my nose in an overpowering way that is crying out to me.

“May I?”

He gestures to my nest. I nod and move over, watching him kick off his shoes. “Can I sleep with you?”

“Fuck, yeah!” I exclaim in victory. “Knew I’d break you!”

“Ha. Ha,” he says dryly. “I meansleep, sweetheart. I told you; you can’t break me.”

“Dammit!” I pout, hoping my bratty sulk will draw him in.

It doesn’t. He slides in next to me and gathers me to him gently, turning me away from him so he can curl up around my back.

“I’m exhausted,” he mutters.

I blink in surprise. He doesn’t admit his weaknesses, even being tired.
