“Mum!” I shriek, standing frozen in the doorway. “What the hell?”
My shock is disabling me right now. I can’t think, I can’t move. When Trent moves me out of the way to stride up to mother, disarming her with a move that can only be described as professional and then slapping some cuffs on her, I finally spring back into motion.
“Trent! What is this?”
“This is me tracking down Enzo.” He gestures with his head to my uncle on my kitchen floor, bleeding out from a shoulder wound. It seems he expected the shot and tried to get out of the way.
“What?” I shake my head in confusion. “What?”
“This is my job,” he says quietly. “Tracking down members of the mafia and taking them down.”
My mouth drops open at the same time that the penny drops. I spin to Nico. “You! This was your doing!”
“Sophia, don't jump to conclusions. I work for your mother and your father. No divided loyalties,” he states firmly and believably.
“So it’s all you,” I say to Trent.
Trent gives Nico a furious glare for effectively throwing him under the bus. “I work for him,” he states, jabbing a finger at Nico.
“I’m confused,” I cry. “Enzo? Are you okay?” I go to him, grabbing a tea towel along the way and wadding it up to place over the bullet wound as I kneel next to him. “And you, Mother! What is this? He is your brother! Yourtwin! How could you just shoot him?”
“Pah,” she scoffs, not at all remorseful. “He deserved it.”
“Somebody explain!” I yell, standing up and putting my hands to my temples, overwhelmed by all of this activity.
“Who bit you that way?” Mum snarls, pulling away from Trent, her hands behind her back as she marches over.
“Trent,” I mutter. “But don’t try to change the subject!”
“You pig!” She shrieks at Trent, who takes it on the chin like a grown-ass alpha would. “You treat my child like a whore!”
“Not at all,” he remarks. “She is my future mate and the other half of my soul. She was free to stop me at any time.”
Gee, thanks, arsehole.
I glare at him as Mum hisses at me.
“This has just…ugh!” I roar. “Will someone please see to Enzo?”
Nico moves into action, kneeling down and helping my uncle out.
“You have loyalty to him?” my mother asks incredulously. “He kidnapped you!”
“Well, yeah, but I wasn’t in any danger. I was just a pawn to get to you. But stop. Everybody stop and back up a minute. Trent? Explain what the fuck is going on here. Why is Enzo here with my mother?”
He sighs and grabs my mum by her upper arm to seat her on a kitchen stool close to him. “There has been a feud in the Calabrese family for twenty years, ever since Gino, your great-grandfather, handed over the family to your mother to run. Lorenzo was livid and started a bloody battle to get it back. Your mother, however, married your dad, who is head of the London mafia and, well, two major crime families was a bit more than anyone was willing to take on. Enzo went underground but didn’t stop his endeavours.” He casts his gaze over to Enzo. “How’m I doing so far?”
Enzo grunts his response.
“Wait,” I say weakly. “Mum? You are in the mafia as well?”
She gives me a steady stare but doesn’t answer me. She’s not admitting to fuck all in front of Trent, I guess.
“Well,” Trent continues. “Nico enlisted my help to track down Enzo once and for all to lock him up because of his threat to you.”
“Me?” I look down at Nico. “What threat?”
